Art and Life: The Story of Jim Phillips movie I was honored to introduce

Had a really fun night Thursday at the Santa Cruz Film Festival introducing the Art and Life: The Story of Jim Phillips Documentary. I was nervous and uncomfortable doing it but you don't say no to an opportunity to share iconic artist and friends movie.
Thank you John Makens and Jim Phillips for having me share your amazing film. I went to the priemere at the Rio when it was released and it brought tears to my eyes all the back stories.
I had been around for many of the early years and it brought back memories from working at NHS and seeing Jay and Rich look at sketches to pen and ink and mechanicals then to see the final products. If you are a artist in the early years of mechanical production before computers you would really enjoy seeing the steps and if you are a computer designer you will get a little history lesson.
The Art and Life: The Story of Jim Phillips movie is now avaible on digital on many of the usual platforms and they have DVD, Blueray and posters on this website.

Friday I was doing my usual Instagram check and setting up a post for Lenz Arts where I am marketing director. They are super supportive of my 15 minutes of fame runnning on two years now. I left early Thursday to go to the movie and was leaving early Friday to drive up to Sacramento to the N-men Gold Rush Giant Slalom race.

Screaming Hand 30th Anniversary Art Show piece

This is my piece of art for the 30th Anniversary for the Screaming Hand art show coming 2015. Rumor has it that the kick-off party/artshow will be held at The Berrics in LA sometime in June. Here is the official list Cab posted on his Facebook page. I posted my art because I have seen others post theirs. Jimbo Phillips, Colby Phillips and Cab to list a few. And not to bag on anyone but no women are listed. An amazing list of artists for sure. I have to mention it because women hit walls all of the time and it is not subtle in anyway. I wasn't surprised to open up the Skateboard Mag at the Santa Cruz Bookshop last week and see not a one skateboarding woman in the issue. My husband says I should make a women's skateboard magazine. Well Cindy Whitehead and I have a little plan. More details soon.

Social Media invites how I add people and why you have been listed

Most already know my background and roots but for those that may think I'm ignoring their invite to Linkedin or Facebook here is a bit of history on how I roll so to speak.

Maximum Impact Design was founded in 1987 straight out of graduating from school by the encouragement of instructor/mentor Russell Leong of Russell Leong Design. I had been managing the Santa Cruz Surf Shop as a buyer for clothing and skate hard goods, designing t-shirts, logos, ads, window displays and airbrushing surfboards at night while attending San Jose State University. Thinking I should get a job at a corporate design firm Russell said why you are already working and doing what you want to do. He told me if I had any questions he would be there for me. The surf shop is where I met Rich Novak (mentor), Jay Shuirman, Doug Haut, Jim Phillips, Bob Hurley (Billabong/Hurley), Mark Miller (Instinct, Look Snowboards, DC), Cindy Ferrari (Sessions), Joel Gomez (Sessions), and several other key figures in my life that would keep me moving in the action sports direction. I had an office at the Sash Mill for 8 years next to Annie Glass and when I learned she was interviewing some top notched design companies, I told her about Russell and he ended up getting the job and designing her logo. I worked 10 years - as a in-house art director for Rockshox and Giro Sport Design. I kept my business rolling all this time but gave lots of work to other design connections. Started working my business full time in 2008 and have been doing what I love 100%. I am a one woman design company who collaborates with many people to expand and shrink per project. I am nibble and fast on my feet as they say.

I have always believed in connecting people and networking. I never thought how many times the connections would keep going around. And decades later I am able to contact people in the industry design collaborations, getting product for styling photo shoot needs from most of the top action sports and outdoor lifestyle brands. I follow many friends as they move from one shoe brand to another and watch them rise from repping brands to owning brands to selling brands. I am tighter using my Linkedin then my Facebook but still let pretty much every girl skater in instantly and people I have skated with. If I appear flaky at times it is only because I am trying to do way too much and am a bit of a workaholic. Yes it is 5:30 am on Sunday when I’m writing this just because inspiration comes usually in the early am for me. There are over 260 people that have asked to Linkedin and 780 or so via Facebook that I have not had time to add or find out if I know them. Though I am kind of public since I do so much social media I am sort of private on my FB because of my kids and picky on Linkedin because it is people I truly work with and many are longtime friends.

The only other women in the skate industry that have been around as long are my friends Cindy Whitehead and Cindi Ferreira Busenhart (Sessions). Cindy Whitehead has the coolest job as a Sportsytlist® she coined it and registered it. In our spare time we have a skate project we are simmering and one day we will get it done. If you want to do what we do you have to work your ass off. No if's ands or buts. It is no cake walk and it takes WORK. But we both love what we do and though it was a path that never was. Take it from us it is the right path. You will get a lot of NO's and have to break through the boy wall but it can be done!

And yes for some folks if I don't get back it's because I am not interested.

3rd Annual Board Rescue Auction is LIVE on eBay

Boards are being posted up on the Board Rescue Flickr and on our eBay account. I put work in progress and event imagery on my Flickr site with links to ebay boards that are up per photo. I will update as best I can. This is a big project to work on as well as be a full time mom with kids. I had the a huge deadline with a company working with 5 artists that had a deadline set for yesterday. As well as ad's for the up coming Sockshop and Shoe Company Hospice Fundraiser. I photographed the boards as they came in and the most on Saturday morning, it is time consuming to crop and edit each piece of art. The lead up to the art show was fun as the boards arrived. Each box or personal delivery was amazing as each artist put their heart and soul into making a special piece of art. I know how hard that is as you are putting your work out there and wondering what kind of response you will get. Everyone did amazing work. If I haven't already called you or sent you a personal e-mail bare with me as I will in the next week. Thank you everyone. And a big thank you to my friends and clients if I have been late on getting your work done. One day I will learn to say NO to the non-profit work but for now I squeeze it in.

Rare Tony Alva Santa Cruz Skateboards

Rare limited edition Santa Cruz Skateboard Alva Sticker by Jim Phillips.

This was made for Alva to launch right when he was going to sign on and skateboard for Santa Cruz. He changed his mind and signed on with Logan Earth Ski. I scoured the internet and didn't find any images or history. I remember the big box of stickers at the top of the stairs. Jay Shuirman told me to grab what ever I wanted because they had to be destroyed. I grabbed 2 stacks of 50 and have given most away and sold a few on ebay for up to $49.50 each. I thought I'd sell this one and help my kids school.

Available on the Mar Vista School Website to help fund raise for the school.
Many of the original Santa Cruz Skateboard team members went to this school.

Found these original contest winner drawings while digging up stuff for the MAH surf show "Surf City Santa Cruz: A Wave of Inspiration". The backs have a questionnaire that asks what is your favorite skateboard brand, who's your favorite surfer...when I get them back from the MAH I'll scan the backs and post sometime minus the personal address and phone info of course.

Donated this same print with for the MAH so the next generation of grommets can have at it when they visit the show. It was great to see many of the new gen of surf artists like Nikki Brookes, Ea Ackerman, Marvin Plummer, Tim Ward, Eli Atkins, Dave Gardner, Patrick Trefz, Thomas Campbell, Stan Welsh, Shawn "Barney" Barron and many others. The old guard was there as well Jeff McCormick one of my, Brenda Scott Rogers of Hotline, Doug Haut, Richard Novak, Jim and Jimbo Phillips, Richard Schmidt, Jim "JD" Deleon, Matt Macuda, Pat and Janet Taylor, Russell Leong and a host of others.

I have a small graphic design case of the logo work I did and airbrushes. Hotline Wetsuits, Rainbow Fins, Santa Cruz Surfboards, Surf Shop and a few others. Also most of the surf mags, books, surf movie posters and puka necklace is from my collection as well as the Original Santa Cruz Crew poster art by Jim Phillips in the middle room on the first floor by the door. It is a classic since it has all the many of the original Eastside and Westsiders that rode for Santa Cruz Surfboards back in the day. Thank you Angela Stucky for doing the signage piece next to the poster so people can see who is who.

Praise the Board Skateboard Show set up day 4 & 5

No pictures from last night's event yet. A full house of over 500 people came out and a 1,000 people total throughout the day. Who'd of thought so many people would be stoked on skateboarding. (I did) It was great to see so many of my old skate buds as well as many other design folks throughout NorCal. Thanks to all those that made it to the opening last night. I guess, I can check off curate a skate art show on my list of things to do in my lifetime.

I'm planning on going and finding out if folks really want to do this event. I keep getting folks asking. I'll do it as long as I don't spend money out of pocket. I'll cordinate and get skaters... I'd love Jim Phillips or Jimbo poster design and a good crowd of skaters to take over Monterey Avenue with respect and bring in some tourist dollars.

We will be developing an online service that can make it easy for people to get involved with and connected to their community and that can serve as a model for other communities.
