Event Santa Cruz Sports Talk

Thank you everyone and Matthew of Event Santa Cruz. I woke up at 4:00 am this morning and was of course regretting not doing a better job. One I wanted to mention the up coming A Very Pleasure-Able Point Valentines with my Badass Skatemom brand. Named inspired by all my friends and people that just plain would say you're a Badass Skatemom at skateboard races and at the skatepark. Skateboarding has been a passion since I was a teen which got me to sponsored by Santa Cruz Skateboards.

It all started while watching Jim Phillips work with Richard Novak and Jay Shuirman going over sketches to final ink art. I worked at the Santa Cruz Surf Shop for 13 years while going to Cabrillo College and SJSU and airbrushing surfboards at night. Long story short I got work in the field I was passionate about Surf, Skate and Snowboarding. I opened my business and started working with Billabong, Sessions, Hotline, Beckmann's Bread. I learned much about retail and was a buyer worked on Window Displays...fast forward. Trade Show graphics, in-house art director Rockshox, Giro Sport Design. While still running my business on the side and giving work to collaborators.

Back to running my business and getting jobs with Cisco, Whole Foods...working with same collaborators that I gave many projects and clients too.

My new passion and new life doing CrossFit which started almost 3 years ago. I got an email from Zac Pine about doing a CrossFit logo for CrossFit Aptos. In no short order my designs started turning into CrossFit related signage seeing a need for signage around the box. Now I'm working on more designs and now doing some contract with CrossFit Headquarters. I am so excite and stoked to be doing what I love.

If you work hard enough and push through you can get what you want. I am doing work that I love.

A Very Pleasure-Able Point Valentines Join us on Saturday February 13th from 10-6 at 907 41st Avenue in Santa Cruz for special sweet things for your special sweet thing. Sneak Peak Pacific Rim Film Festival Banners 2012

Fresh off the press so to speak currently still in production at Stokes Signs but soon to be hung Downtown Santa Cruz next week the Pacific Rim Film Festival banners. The event is from October 19 -24 th. We are adding vinyl type to the black ones so we can update the banners every year. Can't wait for the event.

I did the illustration on the black banner. I didn't to the Koi fish and blossom art.

Fun slalom session this morning. John Ravitch you are the best. Thank you for such a cool gift and the slalom tips this morning. My legs hurt like I did a 1,000 squats.


This afternoon I went to a memorial for a very close friends father. He was a wonderful person and made me thing how lucky I am to be alive. I hope to take away the positive energy I saw today at his gathering. The stories that were told and the memories. I loved the quotes. Live for the moment!

Thank you for working on the book. Farewell to Manzanar with Jeanne and bringing the story of the internment camps out to the mainstream thus getting my relatives to help make the movie "Beyond Barbed Wire".

Maximum Impact Design

I started my graphic design business in Santa Cruz at the Sash Mill in 1987. I worked on many memorable projects designing the logo and packaging for Beckmann's Bakery, Ad's for Billabong, and many other international and local clients. After a fun filled eight years of working solo with very little time for vacations or weekends, I put my business in a hold mode and to went to work in-house as the art director for a bigger company. I kept a few select clients and passed most of the excess work to talented design friends while working full time for some of the best companies in the action sports industry. Over the past decade I have been fortunate to work for a wide range of top brands and experienced some of large scale projects I would never had been able to do on my own. Sessions, General Exhibits and Display, RockShox Inc., my all time favorite for 7 1/2 years at Giro Sport Design doing all things print. In the coming months I'm going to refocus my energy on some unique project opportunities and another Public Art Skate Park project. imagine that. I plan on improving my web skills by taking a few classes. Something I have always wanted to do but never had the time.

I got an really nice email from a student in Canada asking about design. What I told him is to do what you love. You may have to do some work that is not exactly what you want to be doing in the beginning, but stay focused on what you want to be doing so you have a direction and a goal.

When I graduated from San Jose State in the spring of 1986 my graphic design teacher asked what I wanted to do when I graduated. I told her action sports graphics. She laughed as well as a bunch of students that were in my class. She said that would be fun but don't expect to make much money at it. I was a bit disappointed with her response but I knew that she was wrong. I'd been working at the Santa Cruz Surf Shop as a buyer, surfboard airbrusher and designing all the graphics while going to school. I met Bob Hurley who started Billabong in the US, and many up and coming surf brand founders. I was getting requests for designing t shirts and logo's for the surf, skate and emerging snowboard industry. I had another teacher ask me what I was going to do when I got out. I told him I guess I'll have to get a design job over the hill. (San Jose) He asked Why? You are already working and have so many connections through the surf shop. I liked his comments much better. I explained why I had changed career direction. He (Russell Leong) said, go the action sports direction since you have so many contacts and you're already doing it, if you need any help you can call me. Straight out of school I opened my own design business Maximum Impact Design. I ran it solo for eight years in Santa Cruz and had great success. The only problem I had was burn out. I was working 7 days a week and when it slowed I stressed about work and when I was busy I stressed about work. I got an offer to work with a trade show company and went for it. I had my weekends and holidays back. I kept my office open and worked at nights to keep my favorite clients for a year then I closed it and moved it home.

I still have my business which has been a great outlet. I've kept a ton of friends and contacts over the decades and I'm still doing action sports design as the art director at Giro. The path to life is not always straight it turns and bends and has many ups and downs. After a year at the trade show company which taught me how do work on large scale graphics and million dollar Apple Trade show booths, I worked at Session for a year, then a small design firm doing lots of short turnaround print work. I wanted to get back to doing strictly action sports and got a call from RockShox the bike suspension company. It wasn't exactly the sports field I knew but I grew to really enjoy it. Just when things were really going well they decided to move to Colorado. I declined to make the move. The only other company in town that would fit the bill was Giro. I got lucky and got the art diector job. I've been there for over 6 years and love what I do.
I'm forever thankful to Russell who gave me the advise to go with what I love. I in turn give the same advise to others.
