SJSU Video for their Magazine "Judi Oyama is Unafraid to Fly"

Just came across this post today!

Fun day with Michael Adams and the San Jose State Skate Club. https://www.instagram.com/sjsuskate/

Fun article from the San Jose State University magazine.

Judi Oyama is Unafraid to Fly By Julia Halprin Jackson Videography by Javier Duarte and Jonathan Meyer

Largest Skateboard Collection Memorabilia for a female?

Judi Oyama Skateboard Curator (Santa Cruz / Aptos) This is what is out there in the internet world. I do not get included when you look up skateboard curator or historian though I have 50 years of knowledge and I know the history of Road Rider, Independent Trucks, Santa Cruz Skateboards, Skateboard slalom racing, like no other female in the skateboard industry being left out is normal for me so that is why I keep pushing and not just on a skateboard.

She has a massive collection of action sports memorabilia which is a byproduct of her 50-year career as a professional skateboarder and her role as a key industry figure in the Santa Cruz skate scene. She has lived through the sport's evolution, starting in the 1970s, and has held positions as Art Director at RockShox, Giro Helmets, Zero Motorcycles, designer at CrossFit HQ, and ran her graphic design company Maximum Impact Design since 1987, that allowed her to naturally accumulate rare gear and promotional items.

The Collection: She maintains what is widely considered the largest private skate collection for a female skateboarder. Her archive includes rare clothing, contest flyers, ads, and original graphics that document the technology and art of skating since the 1970s.

NHS Skate Museum: Oyama was instrumental in helping curate the NHS Skate Museum in Santa Cruz. This museum houses a massive amount of vintage Santa Cruz Skateboards art and memorabilia, much of which Judi helped organize and verify.

The Smithsonian: Her personal artifacts, including her 1979 skating helmet and 1980 race trophy, are held in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Recent Work: In April 2026, she shared a "collection review" with museum researchers, documenting decades of skate "herstory" to separate it from other action sports like surf and bike.

Exhibition History: She curated the "Praise the Board" exhibit at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History as early as 2009.

One of my reasons for organizing and documenting my skateboard collection. I am working on a retrospective of my skate, art and graphic design for a museum exhibition fall 2026 in San Jose, California at the end of October. I will share details when it is public. I thought since I am going through all of my stuff I might as well try to get a Guinness World Record for Largest Skateboard Memorialbilia Collection for a Female.

I eventually will sell, share loan items to skate museums and donate a few items to charity events for the Japanese American National Museum LA and San Jose. I donated and signed one of my white slalom skateboard racing jersey's to the JANM 2026 Gala and it will be up for on-line auction in 3 weeks. I raced with the jersey at the World Skate Games 2022 in Argentina and placed 4th overall in my sixties.

My 15 minutes continues with a Instagram post from the Olympics "Oldest Female Competitive Skateboarder"

This amazing post on the Olympics Instagram posted at 10:00 am Friday and I see my messages just exploding. I saw World Skate Games on the collaboration and then I see the Olympic rings and the Olympics IG.
I was like wait what!
Thank you to all my friends that have acknoledged this cool thing. I hope it gets more eyes on Slalom Skateboarding, Downhill Skateboarding, Vert and Luge so one day they make it to the Olympics. I think Vert would be the easiest since it has a small footprint compared to the other 3 sports. Vert is fun to watch and there are some amazing skaters. Like Arisa Trew and JD Sanchez from Northern California.
The Olympics posted about Vert Skateboarding which is cool. "What is vert skateboarding?" Tony always gets mentioned when it comes to vert.
I wish they went further back to Tony Alva or Steve Olson and many others that started back in the Hester Series like myself. There were many women who founded the early vert riding like Peggy Oki from the legendary Dogtown skaters Cindy Whitehead Patty Hoffman Vicky Vickers Leilani Kiyabu-Glasheen and many more females. They seem to start vert in the 80's not the 70's.

World Skate Games Guinness World Record Oldest Female Skateboard Competitor

It's been a week for sure. The IG post and video has had over 800,000 views in a little over a week. I have skated for 50 years and never gotten much media until this past 3 years after skating at the World Skate Games in Argentina and Collin Kruse @couchslide followed me with my iphone and took race practice footage. I posted on the hill and it got traction.

World Skate Games posted this story "A Journey of a Lifetime" Guinness World Record Holder & Skateboarding Legend: Judi Oyama Judi Oyama enters Guinness World Records!, with my father's photo from the Capitola Classic.

Invitation to represent the USA Slalom Skateboarding Team Letter

I am honored to get a letter to join the USA National Slalom Skateboard Team.
This is my final year of big contests. Though I said that going to the World Skate Games in 2022 and podiumed on the first day placing 3rd in the Hybrid. I placed 4th overall against all age women. Some as young as 12 to the 9 years younger. I was the oldest competitor racing skateboards. I think I was the oldest athlete at the event. I will need to confirm that.

This year I was planning on going to 2 races before September. I got sick the night before going to the Presidents Race and had to cancel going. It was a tough decision as I had the film Clara Shuku Mokri the director of the mini documentary and Lou Nakasako the co-documentary filmer plus an extra person for the day of the race. I had Jamie Hart flying to meet me and we were going to travel to the hotel in the same rental car. Since I caught C I didn't want to be around anyone and so everyone canceled. I was bummed but it happens.

This year I am going to the Texas Sizzler March 22-24 in Hockley Texas on a soap box derby hill. and coaching Leiola a super talented and young slalom racer. It will be her first slalom race competition. They will have the largest drop in ramp measuring 12 feet high. I have only done 10 and it's scary. I try not to think about the ramp and will just see how I feel the day of the race.
28515 Old Washington Rd, Hockley, TX 77447

Yesterday I saw a post that the World Championships of Banked Slalom were going to be held in New Mexico. I immediately contacted Isa Ruiz a USA slalom team mate and awesome young racer who's dad puts on the race. I have always wanted to skate Ditch Slap because it's suppose to be epic.

In order to fund my racing I'm asking my sponsors to help fund my travel fees by putting brand logos on my board, helmet and jersey.

If you want to sponsor me directly and get a tax letter. USA Slalom Skateboarding is a 501c nonprofit and if you put my name down in the description area the funds will be set aside for my travel expenses. Same goes for LaCosta Racing another nonprofit I am a team rider. Put my name in the description so it will be saved for my racing expenses to get to Rome in September. Thank you!!!

Current Sponsors:

Catto's Graphics Boardroom RacingLenz Arts, RipTide Sports, Insta360 Santa Cruz Skateboards, Bronson Speed Bearings, MobGrip, Sk8kings Skateboards, Sk8kings Turbo Wheels, Girlsnota4letterword, Laird SuperFoods, Old Bones Therapy, 187killerpadsOld Lady Gains cool woman owned former Masters CrossFitter Kim Munoz and badass. I love her messaging and posts on her social media.

Adding more sponsors so I can update my jersey for the World Championships of banked slalom and will update again for the World Skate Games if I get more paid sponsors.

Thank you everyone who has already sent money and helped me. If I missed anyone please hit me up.

Another view.

Here is a link to the 10 foot ramp and 9 foot ramp Texas had but it got eaten by termites.

50 Years Skateboarding Video has motivated young and older to go out and play!

I did not expect the views that the video has had about my 50 years of skateboarding. I am super honored and stoked.

Thank you everyone for the support. I am beyond surprised and even more motivated to keep skating. I got mostly nice comments and did expect a few negative ones but I don't care it's social media.

Skateboarding Longevity and Determination Flashback Issue 1 of Thrasher Magazine

Today, I saw a post about the 500th issue of Thrasher Magazine on Instagram. I looked back at the first issue on Thrasher's website and noticed it had an article about Downhill Skateboard Racing and the Gold Cup Series that I had skated in. (I still have my first copy.)

Spread from the first issue of Thrasher Magazine flashback.

A look back and realization that not being the top women's team rider changed me and probably helped me in the long run. At the Capitola Classic and I was ahead of all of the women even with a crash and sliding 25 feet down the double yellow in short shorts and hitting my head.

After John Hutson won on a set of special Park Rider wheels that were super tall and fast, Jay put the winning wheels on Terry Brown's board and she beat me at the finish line. Winning is winning but I ended up with more photos and press because I raced my heart out. I wasn't the big name I ended up not getting the special wheels and placing second. In the long run it made me fight harder and continue to skate decades later.

(For anyone that wonders why I stopped competing in vert it was the Winchester contest judges that made me stop competing in scored contests and just do timed events and that's another story. Because I get asked alot but don't usually tell why)

Decades later Terry told me she never considered that she won that race. It was good to hear but I will always remember feeling like the second pro rider for Santa Cruz and not as important. I was still honored and proud to be sponsored Santa Cruz Skateboards and Independent Trucks.

Competition is competition it is cut throat and not everyone likes competing. You can have a career as a free rider in some sports like Surfing legend Santa Cruz surfer Josh Mulcoy and freeskier Cody Townsend. Skateboarding not so much.

Capitola Classic shot by Dan Devine took that is in the Smithsonian Collection

If you had told me I'd still be skateboarding and racing in 2022 I would probably think you were cray cray. I remember another competitor asking me what it would be like skating in 20 years? I told her I probably won't be skating that was 18 years ago.

This weekend I will be racing in Southern California my first head to head race since Morro Bay Classic 2019
