Outdoor Retailer Day 3 report

This is the last day of Outdoor Retailer. I am working on my trip report for a few companies I work with. Santa Cruz Skateboards, The Sockshop and Shoe Company, Socksmith, Croakies, Legs and a few others. Met some really nice people and made a few new contacts.

Here is a perfect read from Outdoor Retailer. I have several of these companies on my list of cool products. Yes lots of pet products, kids stuff, recycled reuse and made in the USA stuff.

My to go through pile of swag and catalogs.

Outdoor Retailer Summer 2012 Show Connections

Got back from the Outdoor Retailer Summer Show 2012 late last night. Always nice to see in person the work you have done the year or so before. Croakies product graphics I art directed with several artists from Santa Cruz. Jimbo Phillips, Danny Sun...more cool stuff for 2012 in progress. Can't show.

Saw the booth with Aaron Brookes who hired me to art direct, location scout, style, produce...photos from two shoots. One in November and one in May 2012. The booth graphics look great. Tomorrow is the last day of the show. One of the highlights was showing the sock brand Swiftwick the shots of Elle and Tommy Zaferes wearing their socks. I was scouting for a few companies that I work with. One the Sockshop and Shoe Company from Santa Cruz one of the second largest independent shoe stores in the US. The California rep was stoked to see the images on my iPad and probably happier still to know the shot of Tommy was 15 feet tall at the show. I know some people looked at me thinking I was some Asian trying to knock off their brand. Most companies were really nice but their were a few not to name names. They use to be smaller companies selling just socks but have grown. They weren't as nice. I like working with small brands and brands that make great product. Makes the work even more fun.

Sneak peak up and coming product that Santa Cruz Skateboards has in the works. Made in the USA. Closer up a few have a patch not a sticker as the art. Looks better in person. My photos posted on my OR flickr set.

Outdoor Retailer starts tomorrow

Heading out to Outdoor Retailer to meet up with Croakies, and to check out the Magellan GPS booth graphics they are using from a photo shoot I art directed, produced, location scouted, styled, recruited the talent. Worked with photographer Jay Watson and Magellan GPS Marketing Director Aaron Brookes. Booth graphics by Rob Ligeti. Meeting up with a few brands to make contact for styling and art directing photo shoot projects coming up with Jay Watson. Socksmith Design shoot. I have the talent lined up. Need some shoes, shorts, tops, sunglasses and may put in a skateboard, bike, classic car...

Magellan GPS iCast booth graphics 2012 Photos by Jay Watson

Always nice when I can show work after a shoot. This was shot at Rooster Comb Ranch near Henry Coe Park near Hollister California by Jay Watson here is a more complete portfolio of the project. I am super fortune to have great opportunities to collaborate. This was a fishing, hunting and hiking shoot. We had done a Triathlon shoot prior and all worked well together. I art directed, produced the shoot, location scouted, found the talent with some help from Elle one of the models from the last shoot. Had Matt Twisselman and daughter Allison modeled. (Matt and I went to Kindergarden together and I helped him with the Amgen Bike race surfboard prize.) Heading out to Outdoor Retailer next week to see the Magellan GPS booth set for this show with some of the other images we took and also meet up with Croakies to show them some final work from Jimbo Phillips. I'm going to pick up shoe and sock catalogs for the Sockshop and Shoe Company (second largest Independent Retailer in the Nation no less) and find more brands to use in photo shoots.

Big thank you to the crew: Angela Stucky, Katie Stei, Dylan Tushar, Nils Carlson on the shoot and reps and marketing managers that sent me product and helped out. We couldn't of done it without you. All the contacts and relationships have made it possible to do a wide range of projects for catalog design, location scouting for Totts Champagne, style for clients like American Express and call folks from Oakley to Brookes shoes and get product for shoots is amazing. I take nothing for granted.

Map and shoot list page for the day of the shoot so we stay on track and know what shots to get at which area during the one day shoot. You must stay focused and organized.

Aaron and I worked together at Giro Sport Design. I had him model with his son for a shoot by Bryce Kanights and then illustrated by James Jean.

Outdoor Retailer 2011 Croakies and Stuntpuppy

Went to Outdoor Retailer for the day. It was great to see many of the prints I created as well as collaborations with local artists and designers. Walked the show and met up with a few people from the action sports industry as well. Guess after going to trade shows for two decades you end up seeing a ton of folks no matter if it is SIA, ASR or OR. I was happy to see the Croakies and Stuntpuppy leashes and collars. I saw lots of brands with prints but none with the soft feel and actually printed graphics like this combo. All made in the USA and Croakies has PET recycled bottle belts that were hot.

Meet Todd Francis near the Element booth. He had finished two paintings that were getting raffled off. I had spoke to him via emails and phone calls over the years. We had a close relationship in some ways because he did the art on my Keep a Breast Kings and Queens casting a few years ago. He is going to do a deck for the Board Rescue art show.
