USA Slalom Skateboard Team Logo and sponsorship for the World Skate Games




There was not a logo for the team so I put one together and it's going on all of the team shirts and jerseys. Being a graphic designer it's hard for me not to design everything. 




I am overwhelmed with all the support from sponsors, friends, family and people I have never met.



It's getting real and I am super excited that I am on the USA Slalom Skateboard Team and have the opportunity to travel and skateboard internationally.

Skateboarding over 60 Getting and Keeping Skate Sponsors


I am not ashamed to tell people how old I am and never have been. I have been skateboarding for over 49 years. I didn't even think I would still be slalom skateboarding again for another 21 years. My OG Santa Cruz teammate Steve Olson told me that slalom racing has started up again and I should race. I searched the internet to see where slalom was happening and what board setups everyone was using. Got a hold of Henry Hester another OG teammate and he sent me a Nina Roe Racing deck that was named after his daughter. Fast forward to today next weekend I will be at the racing at the WSG Qualifier #1 Texas Sizzler XVII Mach 2 in Houston (Hockley) Texas.

A month ago I skated in Southern California and was stoked to get a post on one of my favorite websites Judi Oyama crushes it at the President's Jam in Poway . Thanks to my BFF Cindy Whitehead who posted my slalom skateboard racing video on her IG and Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word Movement is fiscally sponsored by Skatepark Association International a 501c3 non-profit established in 2002 who sent me funds to help me to go to Argentina to compete in the World Skate Games. I am one of 4 women that got seated to represent the USA.

All these years of skateboarding I have had long relationships with companies that have sponsored me since I was 16. NHS Fun Factory owned by Rich Novak has been there for me. Bob Denike just celebrated 35 years of being the President of the company. I am humbled and honored to have so many companies support my skateboarding for all these years. 

I have been asking for product and financial support to help raise money to get to Argentina and the other races. It's not cheap and I have other responsibilities like raising a family, and caregiving for aging parents. I feel super fortunate to have several cool brands step up and help. 

Yesterday, Lenz Arts gave me a check to pay for flight the WSG Qualifier #1 Texas Sizzler XVII Mach 2 in Houston (Hockley) Texas. I have been working in-house on marketing products and behind the scenes changes that the customers can't see but will benefit from for years to come. They are an amazing family and I'm working on updating the website, POS and other visual merchandising and graphic projects.

Keeping and getting sponsors takes time and years of dedication. You need to ride the equipment give feedback on what works and doesn't work so it helps the company with future upgrades or products. Never bad mouth companies because it will come back to you. I always tell people to never burn a bridge. Cindy Whitehead and I talk about what it takes to get sponsors and want to help mentor young up and coming skaters. We both worry that because skateboarding has become an Olympic Sport that parents will push kids to the point they will not love skateboarding like we have for all these years.

My Skateboard Hall of Fame Induction 2018 Speech

I'm so honored to be inducted to the Skateboard Hall of Fame 2018. It has been a whirl went of a week. I want to thank IASC and Skateboard Hall of Fame for putting on a great event. I have to thank John Ravitch and Melissa Yinger for helping me edit my speech and bio. I rewrote my speech like 4-5 times. I wanted to thank everyone in it but John reminded me it was about my skate career and what skateboard meant to me. What three things did I want to say. He's had more experience as a speaker and he gave me great insight to how to speak and told me to relax and take the nervous energy as excitement. Big thanks to Cindy Whitehead of Girl is not a 4 letter word, who was inducted in 2016 for her tips since she went through it and knew the ins and outs. Thanks to Laura Thornhill for navigating me through the steps as well, all the key deadline dates for the bio, photos and all hotel info the VIP seats and killer inductee swag bag. Big shout to Steven King who helped fill 3 VIP tables with a serious cool crew of friends, many who drove hours from Northern California to make the venue.

Here is my speech I updated a few words I had changed to be as close to the words I spoke that night. I used an app that was great to practice thanks Jack Smith of the Morro Bay Skateboard Museum for the tip. For some reason that night it didn't work as planned it started and stopped so I had to push it with my finger. NO big deal. My speech in practice was under 6 minutes. I didn't want to have one of the long boring rambling speeches that bored f out to everyone on such a long night as it was.

Thank you to Don Bostick who introduced to come out to do the speech. Don's been a huge part of skateboarding and I hope to see as an Icon SHOF Award winner one day. We go way back from skateboarding for Santa Cruz Skateboards back in the 70's.

Hey. Hello everyone! Hello!

Thank you, Don, for that special introduction. You have been front and center to this sport for decades - I know its been a lifetime commitment and we have all benefited from it - thx. So (pause) you’ve got to know one thing: I am SO AMPED to be here tonight! I feel like I’m standing on a big gnarly 9-foot ramp ready to drop in to a badass hill! (I honestly never thought tonight would happen. Being here with all of you is such an awesome feeling.) Thank you IASC and Skateboard Hall of Fame, and all of my friends!

Along the way, I have made some really amazing friends—too many to mention—but I can tell you we have three full Oyama tables of them here tonight.

So here is the deal - I’ve never been the best skater. Initially, I didn’t skate for contest titles. I just skated for the fun of it - the mastery of shooting down a hill or reaching for a frontside grind in a 10-foot pool. It was always just me and my board. Period. And it still is–cuz I am still pushing. Like many of you, I just love to skate. It’s amazing that so many long-time skaters are still ripping hard and many others are revisiting it with their kids, sharing the legacy of parks, hills and vert.

And as a Mom myself, this is so gratifying to see. You know we have successfully ‘jumped the gap” when a new generation of kids and parents are riding together in the same bowl. How cool is that? Where I ride, we are the “morning crew,” getting our runs in before work or at lunch before the young kids have gotten their sorry asses out of bed! (ha!)

At my first downhill skate contest in 1979 at Capitola, I was the only female and came in 8th among the pack of men. Who knew that downhill skateboarding would grow to what it is today? I’m really proud to be one of the early pioneers in vert, downhill and slalom racing. I skated with many awesome women many which are here tonight.

Thanks to Richard Novak and Jay Shuirman for sponsoring me on Team Santa Cruz, and to all the brands associated with NHS when I was 16. Thank you to Fausto and Eric of Independent Trucks for giving me a set of the amazing suspension trucks that actually turned. Their trucks have kept many of us riding from the 70s to present day.

I want to quickly thank my Dad for taking me to skateparks up and down the California coast when I was 14. Luckily for me, he was a professional photographer - capturing decades of photos of my skating. He never told me I couldn’t do something, and to this day he is supportive (and unfazed) that I’m still skating. Thx, Dad.

More to the point—I never thought I’d still be skating today, not to mention still improving. Though I won the slalom World Championships 15 years ago—I am still racing and competing. Pushing it. I learned to tail drop on my 50th birthday—because I still have this vision of hitting coping like we did at Winchester back in the 70s. Though I’m twice, in some cases 3 times older than the other kids in the bowl, I still feel like a kid myself.

Slalom racing is another story. Its a rush and being older is an advantage - experience really matters. You launch off a ramp on a steep decline before threading thru 60-plus cones in 22 seconds—it’s a full-on head-head battle. Races are lost or won by inches and hundredths of a second. I really love it. It fills my highly competitive side–something that my fellow racers know all too well - I also get to race (and beat) some of the guys.

As you heard from Don, I have been riding for 45 years, and about 5 years ago I was beginning to slow down just a bit. Lose my edge. I could barely get through the final rounds of racing. So I dug in and went from being out of shape to a much stronger version of myself in under a year due to starting CrossFit at 53. Now I can power to the finish line of long gnarly courses and even foot brake at high speeds. Sometimes stopping is the most challenging part of racing!!!!

Beyond racing, I am really proud of the work I did with Board Rescue a skate non-profit Gary Holl founded to help underprivileged children enjoy skateboarding. We donated nearly half a million dollars of equipment to over 5,000 in-need kids by leveraging donations from NHS, Skate 1, Sk8kings, Levis, Google and many others.

If you know me, I am passionate about helping women in our sport. But no one spends more time at it then my long time friend Cindy Whitehead. She spends countless hours gathering news and key milestones all around female skaters with her Girl is not a 4 letter word brand and blog and donates her money to support women skaters. The number of women skaters ripping today is jaw dropping. Read my lips: The women are coming up fast, and I predict we will have some global superstars before Tokyo in 2020. Get ready.

So, thank you. It’s been a great 45 years of riding, racing, designing and representing this sport, I plan to keep riding. Just because I’m getting older doesn’t mean I have to stop. Ever. It has been an awesome life full of skateboarding and I’m looking forward to many more sessions with you. We are the first generation of skateboarders skating into our 60s and beyond - how crazy is that?

Finally, a big thanks to my amazing husband, Greg, and my wonderful kids, Taylor and Ryan, for letting me go ride, race and carve bowls pretty much every weekend.

Leading up to that night there have been many things that have happened to get to the SHOF. Thank you Sevan and Tyson for wanting to make this a CrossFit story to add to the amazing stories that CrossFit shares on their website. I want to share my story about how CrossFit has made me a better version of myself because of my change in diet and constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. I'm getting my own video filmed by Lindsay and Elliot of Schrock Films from Austin. Long story short they arrived a day later than planned so we compressed a two day video production into one day and drove to Anaheim with my family. Thanks to Brad for organizing our travel we took the CrossFit company Mercedes 12 seat Sprinter van that had under 1,000 miles on it. Which I still have sitting in front of my house that I want to take to the car wash and return.

So Thursday morning they did a video of my workout at the regular morning CF class with amazing coach Jenny Lau it was Front Squat day Front squat 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 reps, which was good since the day before was 5,000 K run which was 3 miles on the road and it took me 39.59 just under 40 minutes. (I'm slow.) I PR'ed (Personal Record) 126.5 lbs. after working out. We went to the NHS Museum thank you Rich and Bob for letting us shoot in the museum. They shot my board and safety gear that is there. We drove to LA in the van.

The next day we did an interview in my hotel room, after a short break in 100 degree weather we went to check out a skatepark that was close by. It was full of guy skating and it was a small more street style park. I wasn't feeling it as far as skating. I looked up and found another park 6 miles away in Fullerton. We went there. It was a cool small park with banks and coping more my style. When I first got there it was a bit intimating since there were guy already skating. By the time I left it we were doing selfies and chatting it up. We raced back to the hotel and I had an two hours before heading to the venue. The rest was epic. More to come...


I am the only skater inducted in the 2018 SHOF not in the Juice Magazine article they posted. Go figure.

Gold Rush Classic 2017 Giant Slalom Results

Capitola Classic 1980 photo by my dad. 37 years apart. I don't practice the fast riding since it's hard to find hills. I need to work on my tuck! lol

Year two Gold Rush Classic in Nevada City California, during the hottest days of the century. One of the best giant slalom and super giant slalom runs ever. I use to skip the Giant Slalom because I felt it was too fast and gnarly for me, but over the past few years I starting riding them with Jamie Hart and Cliff Coleman. I'd go up as high as they would go up. Then one of us would get up on the ramp and then it would push one of us to get on the ramp. It was like dammit now I have to do it. I didn't go off the big ramp during the giant slalom it was hard to get through the top 5-6 cones. There was a bump in the road that made your board jump if you weren't careful.

For the Super Giant slalom I did one practice run from the lower ramp and made the course just fine. I hit one cone near the bottom which is jolting at those speeds. Your legs are pretty heated by the last section. We were given 3 runs during the race. I did one run off the regular ramp and got a fast time. I got up on the big ramp even with being scared but anxious I went for it. It felt faster than the first run. I never checked my time which is a big no no and didn't check Nicole's time a fast downhiller since I was 3 seconds faster on the first run. It was 102 on the top of the hill I was just happy and took the rest of the day off. I thought I didn't need to try and go faster, it was hot and I was stoked and done. I probably should of taken a last run and raced myself and done the big ramp again.

I'm stoked to have one and know that these two ladies will be fast and make me try harder. They needed the right set up and will get the hang of it for next year! They didn't make the top of the course mainly because they were riding downhill boards that don't turn like a slalom board. I'm watching and listening to Underexposed Skate Documentary a women's skate documentary. The women's skate movement is strong and I hope to encourage more women, moms and girls to go skate. I have fought the system for decades. I was sponsored by Santa Cruz Skateboards in the 70's, Indy...I have sponsors still and appreciate all they do. First woman inducted in a High School Sports Hall of Fame for Skateboarding?

Well not sure about it but I am honored to be inducted into Aptos High Schools Hall of Fame. I got a call last week from Mark Dorfman the Athletic Director. I was informed that I had been on the short list for a few years and that I finally got into the SHOF for the school. My son Ryan Foy goes there now and plays football. I've walked by the SHOF signs and read names like Tyler Fox (Maverick Surfer founder of Santa Cruz Waves) Peter Mel (Big Wave Surfer dad founded and runs Freeline Design) and Cody Townsend (Extreme Skier known for doing the epic chute video and who's dad was my English Teacher and who I got Giro helmets for before he was a big name but that's another story).

The Dinner isn't until April 2017 and it will be at the Seascape Golf Course. In the 70's I skateboarded for Santa Cruz Skateboards, Independent Trucks, Park Riders Wheels, Cellblocks Riser Pad, OJ Wheels. I have never bought skate shoes I was given Van's and other skate brands as my friends worked at different skate companies. I am fortunate. I always tell new skaters never burn a bridge. Be respectful. If someone offers you a product use it and if it's not something you ride don't take it just to take it.

I raced last weekend at the US Nationals in Oceanside California. Placed 2nd in the women's and beat some of the men in the Hybrid and Tight slalom skateboard race. The Giant slalom was from the top of the hill super rough pavement and fast. I am stoked to be riding and getting support from Sk8kings Skateboards, Turbo Wheels, Independent Trucks, Khiro Skateboard Products, Bronson Bearings, NHS Fun Factory, Rip Tide Foot stops and shoes from Krysta DC rep... Thank you to Lynn Kramer fastest woman on a skateboard who has won the World Title for 12 years in a row. Di Dotson for supporting the women and getting sponsorship monies to match the men's purse. I've been racing for over 40 years. It is still something that needs fixing in many of the male dominated action sports. It will happen but all the women need to work together not against each other. I'm glad the last skate park contests let girls submit a video to get it because it should not be controlled by women that gang together and only invite the girls they know. There are lots of unknown skaters out there that need to have a chance.

Event Santa Cruz Sports Talk

Thank you everyone and Matthew of Event Santa Cruz. I woke up at 4:00 am this morning and was of course regretting not doing a better job. One I wanted to mention the up coming A Very Pleasure-Able Point Valentines with my Badass Skatemom brand. Named inspired by all my friends and people that just plain would say you're a Badass Skatemom at skateboard races and at the skatepark. Skateboarding has been a passion since I was a teen which got me to sponsored by Santa Cruz Skateboards.

It all started while watching Jim Phillips work with Richard Novak and Jay Shuirman going over sketches to final ink art. I worked at the Santa Cruz Surf Shop for 13 years while going to Cabrillo College and SJSU and airbrushing surfboards at night. Long story short I got work in the field I was passionate about Surf, Skate and Snowboarding. I opened my business and started working with Billabong, Sessions, Hotline, Beckmann's Bread. I learned much about retail and was a buyer worked on Window Displays...fast forward. Trade Show graphics, in-house art director Rockshox, Giro Sport Design. While still running my business on the side and giving work to collaborators.

Back to running my business and getting jobs with Cisco, Whole Foods...working with same collaborators that I gave many projects and clients too.

My new passion and new life doing CrossFit which started almost 3 years ago. I got an email from Zac Pine about doing a CrossFit logo for CrossFit Aptos. In no short order my designs started turning into CrossFit related signage seeing a need for signage around the box. Now I'm working on more designs and now doing some contract with CrossFit Headquarters. I am so excite and stoked to be doing what I love.

If you work hard enough and push through you can get what you want. I am doing work that I love.

Campbell Sports Record Makers, Barrier Breakers Winchester Skatepark Reception

The park, located near the percolation ponds on Winchester Boulevard and San Tomas Expressway, enveloped two acres of land in a cement jungle. Judi Oyama, photographed above when the park first opened, began skating in 1973, and still skates today. Badass Skatemom Small Saturday at Santana Row

I printed a small batch of silkscreened cards, tees, undies and bags. I have some new CrossFit inspired "Badass Skatemom" Badass tanks and T's. I will have some of my signage Heroe's, Murph and Fran ADA Restroom signs and Crossing 18" x 18" Prowler and Handstand 3M reflective outdoor signs and stickers.

Makers Market Santa Cruz is heading over the hill. One day over the hill at Santana Row. Small Business Saturday.

When: Saturday November 28th, 2015 (yes, the biggest shopping weekend of the year)

Time: 11am - 5pm

Where: Santana Row @ Park Valencia (outside) and if it's raining we have a nice open overhang to set up.

Congrats BASM Kat Folsom for the great article in Girls Who Ride Magazine. Kat a mom and ripping skater. Santa Cruz Waves BASM article drone shoot day with Daniel Carettoni

It is always hard to do a shoot and have to wait until you are able to show off the images but it was worth the wait. I was super stoked to see the printed issue and article in the new Santa Cruz Waves issue. I was torn between sharing this photo or not too since I didn't want to give credit to the person that tagged the skatepark the morning of this shoot. Big thank you to Daniel Carettoni owner of Santa Cruz Aerials to fit me into his busy schedule. Daniel shoots the drone footage for the Crossfit Games and a ton of other cool footage.

When we arrived the morning of the shoot my heart sank a little seeing all the orange spray paint. Spray paint for one makes the surface slippery for skating and usually the taggers aren't even skaters. The park gets shut down and they have to water jet clean the surface. I want to thank the skaters that morning that were super respectful and accommodating. My Badass Skatemom came from my passion for skateboarding, design and Crossfit. I didn't name myself Badass I got that from friends and people that don't even know me. They would come up to me and say your Badass or your a Badass Skatemom. One other motivation for me was seeing some goofy images of a skate mom when you google skatemom. I want people to know skate mom's are ripping moms who skate or mom's that have kids that skate. There are of course awesome Skatedads too! Thank you Melissa Duge Spiers for writing the piece.

I loved the article but had a few things I wanted to address. Anyone that has worked with me knows I give credit where credit is due from the photographer, illustrator, production, even the press men when I can. I got credit for designing the Think Local First Santa Cruz, Tepui Tents, and the Socksmith logos. Socksmith had a pretty big design company start that one and I think they finished the final design in-house or probably some help from super talented Timerie Gordon. I'm not sure who designed the Tepui Tents logo but I do work on their ads and the past two catalogs. The TFL logo was designed by Max Davis.

Slalom Skateboard World Championships 2015

Great weekend in Ashland Kentucky at the World Championships of Slalom Skateboarding. I won the women's slalom events in all three categories. Won the overall. The European Championships were the same weekend so the women's field wasn't as big, though I did race the two fastest women two years ago at Worlds in Texas and beat them both as the elder it was a big win. I am stronger and racing faster then ever because of doing Crossfit 4 times a week as of January of this year. Yeah yeah yeah. I know my friends are tired of me talking about it but at 55 I shouldn't be winning races and skateboarding at high speeds but I am.

Congrats to my training NorCal buddies John Ravitch for Second in the Giant Slalom and 4th overall. Off the couch Kevin Delaney for first in Hybrid, second in tight, first in Giant Slalom. Imagine how good you would be if you practiced. Should out to Jamie Hart 64 and Norski. We missed Cliff Coleman and a few others. AARP would be proud. lol

I am not posting much since I want to save my photos and video for the Santa Cruz Waves piece about Badass Skatemom and The Box Magazine that has an article about my Skateboarding and Crossfit.

US Nationals Slalom Skateboard Race 2015 go Aptos

Back from a great racing weekend. Got lucky that the Screaming Hand show was the same weekend.

A twofer.

Kevin called us on Saturday asking about the race we told him to come down. He flew in Saturday night we met up in San Clemente staying at my friends Condo. Went to Oceanside in the am and he killed it. John Ravitch, Kevin and I train together in San Jose. Great to get a plug in the today. Masters Slalom Skateboarding is a fast division.

Currently Ranked 1st ISSA International Slalom Skateboarding Association World Ranking

Slalom World Rankings posted this may not last long since the Europeans have so many more races then we do. I am going to the US Nationals in Oceanside and the World Championships in Kentucky this year. Crossfit and Skateboarding helps the elder in the pack to keep skateboarding and racing. I'm the oldest skateboarder and racing longer than any woman in the sport but that doesn't really matter you can get inducted to the Skateboarding Hall of Fame if you do freestyle handstands and rode in the 70's. No one cares if you've ridden bowls, vert, downhill, freestyle and supported kids in for 4 decades. I skateboard because I love to skate that is the only reason. Like many skaters around the world that get no coverage and just ride. Skate on! Skater for Life!

Skate mom racing at the US Nationals 2014 thrills and no spills!

Skateboard mom racing the Giant slalom. Mom weekend with my skate pal John Ravitch. Here is a view of the GS from yesterday photo taken by Jim Goodrich. The first race of the day was the GS they usually run the tight first and end up leaving before the awards ceremony at the end of the day. Well they ran the single lane GS first and I thought I would give it a try. I started from the where the fences ended on my first run then worked my way to the next 4 straight cones stretch. They called out a racers meeting and then we were supposed to run two qualifying runs and fastest run is your time. I had not run from the top. They had an option B run further down from the top with a 10 second penalty. I was on the fence about starting from the top since it was already smoking fast from below the B option.

Big thank you to Chris Favero who walked me through the top and told me where to go wide and scrub off speed. Jamie Hart told me he hadn't gone from the top and he was going to go from the side of the ramp. I hit his tape when he started his run. I was after him so it gets nervy when you are watching your friend go down and then you are next. He made the course so I went and made the course and then Cliff Coleman went. We all gave high fives and hugs at the bottom. We use to all skate in the 70's together for Santa Cruz Skateboards. Who'd of thought we would still be racing. They're in their 60's and I'm in my 50's! Second run Jamie tells me he's going to go off the ramp. I'm like okay? Walking up to the top I wasn't sure I would try going off the ramp. But again as I watched Jamie step up to the ramp and I'm like damn now I'm going to want to do the same and of course I did. I was stoked to take on the hill and make it down the course. It was fast and such a rush.

Big thank you to my Crossfit coach Chris Morse at Crossfit West. Crossfit and skateboarding I highly recommend it. My legs and core are so much stronger. Going down the hill is only half of the race. The other half is walking back up the hill over and over again.

Maybe I should retag and label Badass Skatemom then maybe the skating cow photo won't come up. No offense to the Cow but skate mom should have a skate shot of a skate mom which there are plenty of them out there. Google searches. lol
