Campbell Sports Record Makers, Barrier Breakers Winchester Skatepark Reception

January 16, 2016
Noon to 4:00

This week's #ThrowbackThursday features Judi Oyama and the Winchester SkatePark in Campbell. The park, located near the percolation ponds on Winchester Boulevard and San Tomas Expressway, enveloped two acres of land in a cement jungle. Judi Oyama, photographed above when the park first opened, began skating in 1973, and still skates today. Outdoor Retailer Summer 2012 Show Connections

Got back from the Outdoor Retailer Summer Show 2012 late last night. Always nice to see in person the work you have done the year or so before. Croakies product graphics I art directed with several artists from Santa Cruz. Jimbo Phillips, Danny Sun...more cool stuff for 2012 in progress. Can't show.

Saw the booth with Aaron Brookes who hired me to art direct, location scout, style, produce...photos from two shoots. One in November and one in May 2012. The booth graphics look great. Tomorrow is the last day of the show. One of the highlights was showing the sock brand Swiftwick the shots of Elle and Tommy Zaferes wearing their socks. I was scouting for a few companies that I work with. One the Sockshop and Shoe Company from Santa Cruz one of the second largest independent shoe stores in the US. The California rep was stoked to see the images on my iPad and probably happier still to know the shot of Tommy was 15 feet tall at the show. I know some people looked at me thinking I was some Asian trying to knock off their brand. Most companies were really nice but their were a few not to name names. They use to be smaller companies selling just socks but have grown. They weren't as nice. I like working with small brands and brands that make great product. Makes the work even more fun.

Sneak peak up and coming product that Santa Cruz Skateboards has in the works. Made in the USA. Closer up a few have a patch not a sticker as the art. Looks better in person. My photos posted on my OR flickr set.

Top 7 Photoshop CS6 Features beta download

Looks amazing and I can't wait for the full version to come out!

1. New Interface Photoshop CS6 comes with a new darkened user interface. It's less cluttered and more streamlined. Some might prefer the new look and others might reject it, but it is more contemporary. And because you can control how dark the UI appears and can choose between four different UI color schemes, there's probably a setting that will suit everyone.

2. Adobe Camera Raw 7.0
Raw image files contain the unaltered data captured by digital cameras, before the processing that turns them into viewable images. Photoshop CS6 adds support for Adobe Camera Raw 7.0, a plug-in for editing raw image files. The settings panel has been redone, making it easier to control settings such as Highlights and Shadows.

3 Content-Aware Move. Ever wanted to remove someone from a photo? That's what the Content Aware Fill tool, introduced in Photoshop CS5, can do. In CS6, we have a variation on that theme: Content-Aware Move, which lets you select an object in a single-layer image and move it somewhere else in the picture. Photoshop will fill in the gap created by moving the object, and does so pretty well.

4. Type Styles Dealing with large blocks of text in Photoshop is a pain, or at least it was. Photoshop CS6 is starting to have some of the type styling flexibility of InDesign. New character and paragraph styles make type formatting much easier.

5. Blur Gallery Tilt-shift is the new HDR. The tilt-shift effect--which emphasizes a small in-focus area and blurs the surrounding area to make objects and people look like miniatures--can be accomplished using previous versions of Photoshop, but CS6 makes it even easier with a Blur Gallery that includes Tilt-Shift, Iris, and Field Blur tools.

6. Adaptive Wide Angle This lens correction filter gives you the ability to control the areas in your image that will be subject to adjustment. All you have to do is draw along a curved line of distortion and you can straighten it, making the image look as if it was taken with a different lens.

7. New Crop Tool
It's non-destructive, making it easier to play around with cropping variations.

Skateboard Booth Design 1980's for NHS

Found some negatives and prints from a small scale model I designed for an ASR booth for Santa Cruz Skateboards back in 1989. We ended up doing a simple black booth. They liked this one but it was a bit pricey back then. I envisioned a clean pool with riders doing tricks over the back. At the time it was Roskopp, Hosoi, Salba, Kendall and a few others. Two video's playing on each side and storage inside, large Santa Cruz red dot logo hanging above. Fresh from SJSU and having assisting with Lorri Kershner on some models I got pretty good with the xacto, airbrush and foam core. Second show it would be all graffiti up and more distressed then we could part it out to shops to reuse.

Road Rider and Santa Cruz Skateboard History Lesson

Santa Cruz: World Leader in Action Sports Design

The SCD+IC Skateboard Panel Discussion on May 28th was fantastic. Featuring Connor Welles, Tim Piumarta, Don Bostick, Erik Florio, Judi Oyama, and Danny Keith, fifty people heard them discuss the history of wheels, the development of skateboards, design skills relating to boards, the development of international skateboarding events, how to start out in the industry, and many personal tales of persistence, humor, inspiration, and success. We have since heard that several new design collaborations are emerging from that event - another example of how the Design Center is bringing Santa Cruz together as a creative and business community that is also a world leader in action sports design.

Thanks again to all of our sponsors, especially Santa Cruz Skateboards and Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop. Together we raised the equivalent of $1,000 in food for Grind Out Hunger.

Santa Cruz Design and Innovation Presentation

These are the Powerpoint slides that I put together for the event. I was super nervous last night and worried that the crowd was small which was around 50 people. According to the past events that was a good number. The evening started off with Tim Piumarta - the Director of R+D, NHS who was a great speaker and talked about the history of NHS and the skateboard wheel from the break through of the sealed bearing. The crowd was totally into it and so was the panel. It was exactly what I had hoped for when I asked Chris Younge about holding a skateboard panel. Tim was passionate and excited with tons of knowledge. Stories get passed on from person to person and I don't think that Santa Cruz Skateboards story has really been told. I hope some of the stories that came out last night will get passed around.
Next up was Connor Welles - Hard Goods Development Coordinator, NHS. His parents were in the audience and it was nice to see their big smiles. He did great and talked a bit about the process of getting things manufactured and working with product managers.

After Connor was Don Bostick -President/Director World Cup Skateboarding (WCSK8) he runs all of the X Games and other skateboard and snowboard judging world wide. He spoke about his skateboard passion early roots of owning retail stores, playing music and having the Hawks call him about taking over retiring Frank Hawk's job and how he hung up on them thinking it was a crank call. They called back and he has been running events ever since and traveling the world.

Next up was Erik Florio - CEO and Founder Whagaa/Go Learn to Skate iphone app which is based in Scotts Valley. Talked about the early days of wanting to do apps before the iPhone and his connection with DK. It was nice to hear everyone's connection to skateboarding and career paths.

I was next and did my presentation with my PowerPoint slides. A good program to know and have in your back pocket.

DK talked about retail, Grind out Hunger and social networking. Twittering...I can't believe he turned 40 last week. He still looks like a kid. He was asked questions about retail now verses the past. How parents are buying boards with their kids. Longboards are a growing segment and how he likes to encourage kids to skate and how lucky they are to have so many skateboard parks.

I wanted to share that design comes in many forms. Graphic design print, clothing design, magazine, and book, product, and tried to show products that were all skateboard related.

Showed this skateboard park slide to show the possibilities of park design. I had asked Zach Wormhoudt to join us but he was too busy with work and couldn't make it.

Showed more gear designs.

Showed interior design via skate shop in NorCal.

Well thought out plans and end design all skateboard related.

Clean well designed shop.

Santa Cruz Skateboard projects hanging 26 inch POP before computers all hand produced production. Ad for inside back cover ASR magazine mid 80's.

Tracing paper hand drawn rough layout that was approved for EA ad's that ran in Thrasher, Transworld, Gaming magazine and one pager in Spin. Bonjovi was on the cover and big then if it tells you anything.

Black and white photo I hand colored the skater jumped 40 times and this was the best shot. Didn't know until you saw proofs. I airbrushed the wall and layout out all of the props, where the graphic screens shots were white taped foam core in position so it could be dropped in via old school production. I was sick as a dog the morning of the shoot and had to just act like all was good when the client showed up. I would of been in bed if I had my choice. You work through it. I didn't go into details like during the talk.

Years later Nike comes out with a shoe color combo after the game. Go figure. I heard it sold well to boot. Nike had no clue that they were a popular shoe back in the early days of skating. They paid there way into the sport twice and finally got in.

Bulky. I had to put him in. I mentioned if you ever get a chance to eat at the Apple head quarters check out the photo on the wall that has a bunch of famous rock stars and artists. You'll see a diagram of all the players. Steve is in the photo and is the only person not called out.

I wanted to hire Moshe Brakha who did the Sky Vodka imagery for a Rockshox Ad Campaign. The manager Mike (we are still friends) said you can't afford us and was super rude. Some how talking about skating and knowing Olson made things better. Moshe wanted to do the job and we did it. Skating actually opened doors.

Giro trade show booth graphics and illustration work by James Jean was one of my favorite projects.

Photography by BK (Bryce Kanights) founder of the Skatedaily.net, amazing skater and photographer. Imagery of Aaron Brookes who was at the event. Soon to launch his BrookleBee marketing company.

Jimbo Phillips wave design collaboration. I think I mentioned throughout my talk how important it was to network via linkedin, facebook, twitter...and how it really works.

All in all I think it went well. I think it would of been a full house if we had no charge at the door. $15.00 bucks a person is pretty steep. At the end of the evening the Raffled a Santa Cruz Longboard a super stoked winner. I had a ton of folks tell me what a great event it was. Stories are meant to share and I think that we gave enough info for the next generation to share to keep the history of skateboarding in Santa Cruz and it's roots in check.

Thanks Maya, Chris, Davy, Ruby, Paul, Jeremy, Iris, Ryan, and everyone that believed.

You get what you give

Networking, meeting new people, finding old friends, and being open to new ways of thinking are all good things. Seems like more of my friends are thinking of ways to make things happen for themselves. Collaborating with folks to create a product, develop a website, do work for a non-profit, looking for the long term goal and not the short pay out.
