Female Asian-American Professional Skateboarder Judi Oyama Wikipedia Page

So cool to get a Judi Oyama Wikipedia page for skateboarding.
Thank you for whoever added me.

I don't always get the coverage other women skaters did during the 70's. I have been skating none stop since I started and finally getting some credit. I hope I inspired other vert, downhill and women, they, them he or she skateboarders that love skateboarding as much as I do. Never Stop!

Skateboard Sports Hall of Fame Speech Judi Oyama Class of 2017

Last nights Aptos High Sports Hall of Fame Dinner at Seascape was awesome. I am proud to be inducted with a fellow athletes from Aptos. I was the oldest class of 1977. It was great seeing coaches Jame Townsend and Lynch. At the end of the night we talked about Dave Devine. I thanked him in my speech and they said it brought great memories. We got a great plaque, award, lifetime pass to all Mariners events and a t-shirt. Big thanks to all that helped put it on and to Mark Dorfman, the Athletic Director.

Thank you to my BFF skate buddy John Ravitch for writing my retrospective. We have been skating together for the past 15 years. We skated back in the day but didn't know each other until we met in Hood River while I was walking to the race. I'm so grateful we met and stay friends. I am even more motivated now to try and go to Worlds in Canada in September. Thanks everyone that came up and talked to me as well. It was nice to see old friends and meet new ones as well.

Here is my speech.

For the record I’m more nervous public speaking then launching myself off a 9 foot ramp. I was super stoked to get this award and then stressed about having to get up in front of everyone and speak. I think awarding a skateboarder into their Sports Hall of Fame may be a first for any High School Sports program and a woman on top of that even better. Thank you! Congrats to Aptos High for being ahead of other programs by recognizing big wave riders Tyler Fox and Peter Mel, extreme skiers like Cody Townsend (who’s dad Jamie was my English Teacher) and many other athletes that do sports that aren’t usually a mainstream sport. I am honored to receive this recognition for a sport that has always been considered renegade. Skaters have a reputation for being bad but we’re not all bad. I have been skateboarding for over 44 years. I learned to skate when I was 13 with my brother Cary. We bought a board together for $24.95 and I never stopped skating. Cary couldn’t be here tonight because it’s his night to care take my mom and her husband we take turns with other family members. I learned how to skate the same ages my parents were in the Japanese Internment Camps. I reflect all the time that they didn’t have the same childhood I had so take advantage of every opportunity that I can. I’ve kept skateboarding because I love to skate. NO, I can’t do an ollie which a lot of the boys ask my son Ryan. I did learn to tail drop at the skatepark on my 50th birthday. I don’t ride pools or parks as well as I did before but that adrenaline I feed off of slalom racing on the other hand which is faster than in the past because the equipment has improved. I keep thinking I’m going to stop but then I go to a race and I come back energized and stoked again. I know if I stop I’ll never start again. I have to thank my dad for taking me to the skateparks up and down the coast while he went golfing. It was a perfect combo for the both of us. He still golfs here regularly. Thank you to my family for letting me go skate on the weekends and keep racing, and to many of my friends that probably get tired of my talking about skateboarding.

A few years ago at the World Championships in Texas they had two start ramps a regular 4 foot and a 9 foot that they called the BAR which stood for Big Ass Ramp. I went up to the top via a ladder it was shaky, creaky and I looked down and said hell no and climbed back down. But when we started racing and there were two younger women one from Russia and Latvia, both the fastest in their countries. I knew I had to get back up on the ramp. My teammate who is 10 years younger and no kids was in first place, I wanted second. I climbed up the ramp that was tilted at a forward angle so when you dropped in you couldn’t see part of the ramp just the pavement. I just looked ahead and went for it and took two seconds off my time and that got me second place. The ramp, not the race, was my accomplishment. One of the ladies came up to me after the race and said you are crazy. I’m not sure if I’m crazy but I know I will always challenge myself.

I always encourage women and girls on the sidelines that are watching their husbands, boyfriends or brothers skateboarding to try it. There is no reason to be a spectator. Get out there and do it whatever it is. I don’t want to have any regrets for not trying something. Many people don’t have the opportunity we to have to do all types of challenging and fun sports. Thank you for recognizing people that have a passion for a non conventional sport like skateboarding.

GO MARINERS!

Pleasure Point Fair back to my roots

I was born and raised at this small house on Hawes Drive on Pleasure Point and then we moved to Aptos and then I moved back to Pleasure Point and then back to Aptos. Today it was great to spend the day at the fair seeing old friends and sharing space with Brian and Sabine of Eastside Industries. I lived off South Palisades for 15 years between 19-36 a huge part of my skate life and early graphic design career started on the Eastside. I use to love to do window displays in the Santa Cruz Surf Shop. I airbrushed surfboards at night while commuting to San Jose State studying illustration and design. My first t-shirt designs were for the Santa Cruz Surf Shop and NHS or Santa Cruz Skateboards. So now it is full circle to be selling my Crossfit inspired Badgirl Mermaid and my Badass Skatemom Skate shirts. I don't take anything for granted. You have to pay your dues and work hard to make things happen. I am forever grateful. I love what I do and feel lucky for all the support. Badass Skatemom was coined because all my friends and even people I didn't know would say your a Badass Skatemom after seeing me skateboard slalom race or if they heard that I skated and was a mom. Not something I would call myself. lol

Dolphin airbrush foam core and paper.

Surfboard Airbrush.

This design was a sticker and a tshirt. Type designed by Jim Phillips.

Badass Skatemom launched two months ago. I guess I've been talking about it for years because a few people came up to me today and said you finally did it after talking about it for so long. Yes, a mini line for myself to play with designs I like that for you, me, moms, women, girls that kickass. Some designs are inspired from working out with friends that I do Crossfit with. I"ve had many ideas brewing and there are more things coming down the pike. Thank you to people who have never met me and friends that support me always I thank you.

Crowd Fav of course Jimbo Phillips graphic t shirts. Nice to see Jenny and a few of Colby's pieces.

Skate contest a large crowd as always. TC always giving to the skate community.

Dew Tour Championships Las Vegas '10 Results

Posters designed "Studio Number One (SNO) is a Los Angeles-based creative firm where art and design bridge the gap between culture and enterprise. Founded in 2003 by artist Shepard Fairey, the studio has built a reputation as one of the most influential creative agencies in the country. One of the advantages of living in SoCal is getting the rad work. Wish some art projects at that scale would head North like Santa Cruz. Seems most projects are in SoCal or Oregon near Niketown. I have a crew of talented folks that would love to have a chance to do some work like that. Action Sports is a tough market. Try to be in NorCal and a woman owned design business. It can be done. It just takes twice the work and lots of connections.

Wefollow Skateboarder

I like being number eight on wefollow in both most influential and most followers skateboarder. Along with skaters like PLG, OneFelix, Rob Dyrdek. Not done by following as many skateboarders as I can but by selecting the ones that really know the sport or have passion for it. And by sharing skateboard news and events that mean something to me. I embraced social media many years ago mainly as a way to communicate about skateboarding and design information with friends. For things like where were going to skate on Saturday morning to what design help information we could share.
Who'd of thought it would lead to working with clients on Twitter, Blogger and Facebook. Online marketing grew and grew. It's the new 411 for information. Used right it can get you work used wrong and no one cares. I'm oldschooler twitter.com/oldschooler.

No more Myspace going to Ping

I should of canceled my account awhile ago when they started advertising Girls Gone Wild. So disrespectful to women and insulting. Greed. I hope that the same doesn't happen to Facebook. Such a much better place to communicate with friends and family. Happens to the best of companies when people that don't get it run them into the ground. They never understood the culture they only look at numbers. If your company loses its sole no amount of money can buy it back. You loose customer loyalty and then your core folks leave. And lately all have been leaving and making plans for a better future.

Skateboardmania flashback

So there are times in your life you do things knowing it is not exactly what you envisioned yourself doing but you do it for the experience. This was one of those times. In the late 70's their wasn't many ways to make money as a skateboarder, so when the opportunity came up to try out for this skateboard tour that was going to pay you for skateboarding and take you on a 6 month journey across the US and then go worldwide you go for it. I was 18 at the time and knew this was something worth trying, since their wasn't money in skateboard racing unless you were a guy and I had bad experience with competing in skate parks after Winchester skate park contest because of what one competitor did to get second. That's another story.
They had 150 skaters try out for it. They picked the ones that they could choreograph and make them wear silly Earthling and Alien outfits. Of course they didn't tell us about the H&R Puff n Stuff style costumes until after we were committed and already in rehearsals in Hollywood.
We spent three weeks in Hollywood, stayed on the Queen Mary for a week and practiced in the Long Beach arena. Then took a Rock n Roll bus to Fresno to do a 10 day practice in their new arena. I remember we were 7 semi trucks and a million dollar show. 40 roadies and filled the hotels as we traveled. On our way we over heated the bus playing PONG (at the time it was so modern) every TV and Stereo on 10. It was hot and I'll never forget cause DP (Duane Peters) got out and laid on the side of the road to sun himself like being on the beach. We all were like what? Newport Beach surfer just enjoying the time.
While in Fresno we heard about the new skateboard park they had. We were told we could not go and if we did we would be jeopardizing our spots. Don't know how it transpired but Lelani Kiyabu, Steve Shipp, Duane Peters and I were asked if we wanted to go one night but told not to tell anyone. I think it was kind of a marketing thing cause there was no way a bunch of skaters at the skate park were going to not say something. We were doing a couple practice shows in Fresno and I think they wanted to get some buzz going. I remember it had a metal full pipe that was really nice. It was smooth, grippy and had a perfect transition. They asked us to promise not to get hurt. Well of course we said no worries. I think all of us had some sort of scrape or bruise. The next day without even saying we went our cohorts said you guys went to the park!
Once in awhile a memory will pop up in the head so I like to try and write it down.
Yeah we looked like dorks, yes we stayed in top of the line hotels, got fed, got paid and got driven around like rock stars. We were 16 - 27 years old. Many of us still friends, many of us still skate.

Women in Skateboarding Audio Project

Super stoked to be part of Patty Fung's UCSC multimedia audio project about Women's Skateboarding.

Patty Fung:

As part of my community studies social documentation course at the University of California, Santa Cruz, we were asked to select a medium and to produce a short documentary on a subject of our choice. The subject I choose was women’s skateboarding with a goal of highlighting not only the barriers that continue to exist today, but the rich narrative of women who have been riding since the rise of the sport as well as the recent growth of female skate communities that empower and encourage girls of all ages and abilities to ride with confidence. What you will listen to here is not only an assignment for a course, but a project for the community of women skateboarders all over the world who have ridden and those that continue to push the limits of skateboarding with passion.

(Note: My hopes is that this will be continued as a bigger project to capture the stories of individuals beyond the community of skateboarders in the Bay Area, California. If you would like to share your stories, experiences, and related media about the subject, please contact me at patricia.s.fung@gmail.com with “Audio Documentary” in the subject line.)

Voices:
Steve Caballero, Kayla Caballero, Cindy Whitehead, Patti McGee, Julia Davis, Jolie, Mathew George, Gary Holl, Erica Harris and myself.

Thanks Patty.

My interview was done at Nextspace it seemed as though we were being followed by the Harley from Patty's place to downtown. I enjoyed the Nextspace ROP graphic design forum yesterday morning. Thanks for the invite Iris, Jeremy and Ryan.
