Skateboarding Hall of Fame first woman Inductee

Skateboarding Hall of Skate inductees.

Big congrats to Patti McGee. It would of been nice if the women had more categories like the men's did last year. From the 1960's, 70's, 80's. 90's and 2000 it wasn't quite even but I guess one is better than none. Some things never change. They didn't list skaters like Cara-Beth, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins, Elissa Steamer, Amy Caron, Vanessa Torres and a host of others that should of been listed like some of the younger skaters on the men's side.

I should just be happy we got one woman in. That is the most important thing. I don't want to take away from that. It is truly a great thing. So many skaters that pushed the sport like Cindi Whitehead, Leilani, Terri Lawrence, Terry Brown, Peggi Oki, Kim Cespedes, Laura Thornhill, Robin Logan, Ellen Oneal, Ellen Berryman, Jana Payne, Karrie Cooper and now the next generation.

Six skateboarders have been announced as new inductees into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. The honored skateboarders are Torger Johnson, Stacy Peralta, Steve Caballero, Eric Koston, Bob Burnquist and Patti McGee. McGee is the Hall of Fame's first female inductee.

The first skaters welcomed into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame, in October 2009, were Bruce Logan, Tony Alva, Tony Hawk and Danny Way. This year marks the second annual induction, which is put on by the International Association of Skateboarding Companies and Skatelab.

Girls Combi Pool Classic girls it's your time go SKATE!

Back in the day at my peak of skating all the skate parks closed and if their were skate contests they usually didn't have any women invited. Now 30 years later it is great to see a women's only skate event. I hope many of you up and comers can make it down to skate.

Congrats to Beckmann's Breads 25 year Anniversary!

Went to Beckmann's Breads 25 year Anniversary last night at the Santa Cruz Bowl.
Had a great time and was proud to have been apart a little part of it. I designed their logo and packaging somewhere back in 1993 with Peter Beckmann and Sharon May, worked with Beth as well. Peter, Sharon and Beth gave many thanks to all the families and people that have made it happen over the past 25 years. Gifts for all departments and many thanks. To another 25! Peter is one of the founders of the Think Local First Santa Cruz org. He's also the person that got me waking up and starting my day with bakers hours.

Think Local First - County of Santa Cruz is a network of independent and locally owned businesses and community organizations joining together to promote economic vitality and preserve the unique character of our community.

I'm not Peggy Oki but I'm cool with the comparison

Back in the day I was often mistaken to be Peggy Oki or Shogo Kubo. I had to argue with a skater back in the 80's that this was really me in this photo taken in 1979. Well I came across this link and thought it was funny I'm still being called Peggy. Well that's an improvement from being mistaken for being Shugo who is a guy. The guy told me it couldn't be me because girls can't skate like that!

Dew Tour Championships Las Vegas '10 Results

Posters designed "Studio Number One (SNO) is a Los Angeles-based creative firm where art and design bridge the gap between culture and enterprise. Founded in 2003 by artist Shepard Fairey, the studio has built a reputation as one of the most influential creative agencies in the country. One of the advantages of living in SoCal is getting the rad work. Wish some art projects at that scale would head North like Santa Cruz. Seems most projects are in SoCal or Oregon near Niketown. I have a crew of talented folks that would love to have a chance to do some work like that. Action Sports is a tough market. Try to be in NorCal and a woman owned design business. It can be done. It just takes twice the work and lots of connections.

The site has a simple and clean interface, making it easy to find Twitter users with similar interests or in similar industries. Several big names have voluntarily joined the directory including companies such as Google (Google) and celebrities like Ashton Kutcher. It’s important to note that several listings on the directory were added manually, such as The New York Times.

Social Media and marketing

I work with clients that have small businesses and show them how they can use Social Media as a marketing tool and benefit. It's not about how much money you spend it is the right time and the right locations. Check the stats on this video.

Wefollow Skateboarder

I like being number eight on wefollow in both most influential and most followers skateboarder. Along with skaters like PLG, OneFelix, Rob Dyrdek. Not done by following as many skateboarders as I can but by selecting the ones that really know the sport or have passion for it. And by sharing skateboard news and events that mean something to me. I embraced social media many years ago mainly as a way to communicate about skateboarding and design information with friends. For things like where were going to skate on Saturday morning to what design help information we could share.
Who'd of thought it would lead to working with clients on Twitter, Blogger and Facebook. Online marketing grew and grew. It's the new 411 for information. Used right it can get you work used wrong and no one cares. I'm oldschooler twitter.com/oldschooler.

Santa Cruz Freelance Camp Oct 2

Only 22 hours left to register Santa Cruz Freelance Camp tickets on-line. I went last year and thought it was a worth every penny. Great networking and inspiring.

Attention: Last year's event sold out at 300 attendees, this year we are limiting the number of attendees to 150. We expect to sell out so buy your tickets now before they sell out!

Freelance Camp Santa Cruz 2010 is the 3rd annual Santa Cruz Freelance Camp. If you are or plan on being a PRO at running your business, this event is for you. Trade notes with your peers, learn how to run your business from multiple perspectives, Share, learn and grow with other like minded professionals in a fun and supportive enviroment. Oh, and get cool SWAG too!

You ask: What is a BarCamp? BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants. The day consists of sessions proposed by attendees and the schedule is created on site the morning of the event. BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn from each other in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Small Business Owners
Independent Contractors
Freelancers
Consultants
Anyone Running a Professional Micro Business

SOME OF THE TOPICS we imagine might surface (just to prime the pump). Of course, you the attendee will chose the topics on the day of the conference:

* Transitioning from Freelance to Agency
* Balancing Products with Services
* Running 100% Remote
* Freelance Coops & Coworking
* The Art of Subcontracting

WHAT TO EXPECT AT FREELANCE CAMP:

The day will start at 8am with an hour of socializing over coffee and pastries. We will be handing out stainless steel Klean Kanteens to the first 150 registrants at the sign up. We have 120 Kanteens and150 sign ups slots so come early! It is really important you arrive by 9am so you can participate in creating the day’s agenda. At 9am sharp we will give directions on how to propose a topic and then we will create a schedule. The schedule building takes an hour. Come prepared to participate in this dynamic hour long session. This is one of the most important parts of the day! We will be harvesting the minds and expertise of all the people in the room to come up with topics pertinent to freelancers. If you’d like to lead a session you’re going to want to speak up with your topic idea at 9am, when the schedule is being created.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:

* Your own coffee mug
* A head full of topic ideas
* Your laptop (free wi-fi provided.) If you are not so inclined to arrive with electronic note-taking items a simple notebook and pen will do.
* Lots of business cards. This is a great networking opportunity. You can get a quick turnaround from Zazzle.com if you are in need of cards.

FOOD:

A light breakfast including all the Lulu's coffee you can drink will be provided by Freelance Camp. Snacks will be provided throughout the day. Lunch will be catered and is being sponsored courtesy of the City of Santa Cruz Redevelopment Agency (Thanks Peter! You rock dude.)
