GN4LW post to help Fundraising for the World Skate Games in Argentina!

Fundraising for the World Skate Games in Argentina!

More than halfway there in funds.
Big thank you to my BFF Cindy Whitehead for posting the "Support Judi Oyama in Going to Worlds for Slalom Racing!" article to help my fundraising efforts. I hate asking for help and so this has been a great vehicle to let people know I need help with expenses so I can skateboard internationally. Cindy is a Sportstylist® OG vert skateboarder and best friend since the 70's.
Cindy has a female empowerment movement & brand, “Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word” that gives back to girls in skateboarding via 501c3’s and micro-grants. GN4LW also creates opportunities and gives visibility to females in a male-dominated sport. Her mission has been profiled in espnW, Forbes, Teen Vogue and more.

Girlhood (It's Complicated) Virtual Opening Female Skateboard Pioneers and BFF's

Here is a little back story to this event. Jane and Beth collected my Flyaway helmet and trophy. They have come out and personally interviewed us for more background on women in skateboarding, our herstory and what the items we donated meant to us and when and how were they used or won. Won in my case was because I gave them one of my first place trophies from the Berkeley Skate Contest years ago.

Back story on the black flyaway helmet. That was Rebecca Botelho she did the custom pin striping. I was going to have her do one for me and instead we did a helmet trade and I gave her a new flyaway helmet and she gave me the black one. She still skates and is awesome. We skated together a few years ago when my husband had a cyclocross race down in Los Osos area. She is helping get a skatepark built in Cambria. www.skatecambria.com

I was super honored to be apart of this virtual opening yesterday. I put together my video and self-interview. I was going to hand it off to Daniel Carettoni of Santa Cruz Aerials so he could smooth it out. I didn't have a ton of time so I didn't redo my interview areas. When you get behind the camera or iPhone you don't always say exactly what you planned to say. I wanted to redo some of the slow bumpy talking.

At the end of my video I put photo and video credits. Thank you to my friends that have been kind enough to take a photo or shoot with my camera when I ask them. If not for my dad who took most of my photos my story would not have been documented.

Day 9 of no sugar, no grains, no dairy, no alcohol  no fun. I am doing it until October 22. 21 days to exact.

The history of girlhood is not what people think; it is complicated. Young women are often told that girls are “made of sugar and spice and everything nice.” What we learn from the past is that girls are made of stronger stuff. They changed history. From Helen Keller to Naomi Wadler, girls have spoken up, challenged expectations, and been on the front lines of social change. Although definitions of girlhood have changed, what it means to grow up female in the United States has always been part of the American conversation. More details at girlhoodlive.com

Congrats Kat Badass Skatemom

Congrats BASM Kat Folsom for the great article in Girls Who Ride Magazine. Kat a mom and ripping skater. Thank you to Cindy Whitehead of "Girl is not a 4 letter word" for collaborating with my Badass Skatemom brand. You are the ambassador of women and skateboarding for sure. You are always pushing forward and speaking out for all women and girls when we get pushed down and get little coverage in the media.

Missed the Skateboard Hall of Fame 2015

I'm in Colorado finishing the last details of John DeAndrea's new website and helping on a casting today. I choose not to go to the HOF until I see my friend Cindy Whitehead inducted. I'm not afraid to say it's political just like Skateboarder magazine was back in the day. Not being a negative or a bad egg just telling the facts. I'm proud of Henry Hester and Duane Peters for getting in from the Santa Cruz Skateboard Team as well as all of the other inductees.

Cindy has been skating since the 70's, had "Girl is not a 4 Letter Word" and has been an advocate to helping women in skateboarding for decades and she didn't even make the list. In general, many of the skaters in the 60's and 70's are getting older and several should be inducted per year. I'm glad they are at least picking more than one woman per year as they did in the beginning.

I'm looking forward to assisting John DeAndrea and Lorraine today in a casting of a new piece. Here are a few images of John's museum show we went to after they picked me up at the airport on Thursday and a studio shot.

Work currently at the Denver Art Museum.

Women's Bowl contest at the Van Doren Invitational a full on event

Congrats and good luck to all the women skating in Monday's event. It is great to see an all women's skateboard event. Rare these days. Most events back in the 70's had a handful of women skating. That is when the camera crew usually took their break. It is nice to see decades later the women are finally getting their due. Have a great event and congrats to all of the women skaters.

Let me know if you want a different link I found these via the internet.

Early bowl riders that competed back in the 1970's were mostly male not very many women skaters. Here are a few that I have photo's of. If you look on line you will not find very many. And many woman skaters didn't get much coverage. Most of the photos are of freestyle and handstands. I like the pool photo's like this one of Cindy Whitehead Sportstylist® who has a great blog Girl is not a 4 letter word and supports women skaters. The "Girl is Not a 4 Letter Word" skateboard is a collab between Cindy Whitehead x Dusters California in conjunction with Longboarding for Peace. A portion of the proceeds benefit GRO (Girl Riders organization).

Terri Lawrence regular Lakewood Skatepark female skater was a top vert rider back in the day. It is hard to fine 70's vert riders from back in our era. Stoked the current female skateboarders are getting center billing.

Intothegloss Women's Skateboard Story "Cool Girls Skateboarding"

Nice article find thanks to my friend Cindy Whitehead for posting it on her blog "Girl is not a 4 Letter Word". Of course they put me down as Peggi Oki but that isn't unusual. Not to many Asian American Skateboarders back in the day. So it goes. Nice to be mentioned at all. Still skating and proud to be a part of the OG girls history. Thanks for writing this piece EMILY FERBER. Cool Girls Skateboarding

Social Media invites how I add people and why you have been listed

Most already know my background and roots but for those that may think I'm ignoring their invite to Linkedin or Facebook here is a bit of history on how I roll so to speak.

Maximum Impact Design was founded in 1987 straight out of graduating from school by the encouragement of instructor/mentor Russell Leong of Russell Leong Design. I had been managing the Santa Cruz Surf Shop as a buyer for clothing and skate hard goods, designing t-shirts, logos, ads, window displays and airbrushing surfboards at night while attending San Jose State University. Thinking I should get a job at a corporate design firm Russell said why you are already working and doing what you want to do. He told me if I had any questions he would be there for me. The surf shop is where I met Rich Novak (mentor), Jay Shuirman, Doug Haut, Jim Phillips, Bob Hurley (Billabong/Hurley), Mark Miller (Instinct, Look Snowboards, DC), Cindy Ferrari (Sessions), Joel Gomez (Sessions), and several other key figures in my life that would keep me moving in the action sports direction. I had an office at the Sash Mill for 8 years next to Annie Glass and when I learned she was interviewing some top notched design companies, I told her about Russell and he ended up getting the job and designing her logo. I worked 10 years - as a in-house art director for Rockshox and Giro Sport Design. I kept my business rolling all this time but gave lots of work to other design connections. Started working my business full time in 2008 and have been doing what I love 100%. I am a one woman design company who collaborates with many people to expand and shrink per project. I am nibble and fast on my feet as they say.

I have always believed in connecting people and networking. I never thought how many times the connections would keep going around. And decades later I am able to contact people in the industry design collaborations, getting product for styling photo shoot needs from most of the top action sports and outdoor lifestyle brands. I follow many friends as they move from one shoe brand to another and watch them rise from repping brands to owning brands to selling brands. I am tighter using my Linkedin then my Facebook but still let pretty much every girl skater in instantly and people I have skated with. If I appear flaky at times it is only because I am trying to do way too much and am a bit of a workaholic. Yes it is 5:30 am on Sunday when I’m writing this just because inspiration comes usually in the early am for me. There are over 260 people that have asked to Linkedin and 780 or so via Facebook that I have not had time to add or find out if I know them. Though I am kind of public since I do so much social media I am sort of private on my FB because of my kids and picky on Linkedin because it is people I truly work with and many are longtime friends.

Maximum Impact Design Facebook page

The only other women in the skate industry that have been around as long are my friends Cindy Whitehead and Cindi Ferreira Busenhart (Sessions). Cindy Whitehead has the coolest job as a Sportsytlist® she coined it and registered it. In our spare time we have a skate project we are simmering and one day we will get it done. If you want to do what we do you have to work your ass off. No if's ands or buts. It is no cake walk and it takes WORK. But we both love what we do and though it was a path that never was. Take it from us it is the right path. You will get a lot of NO's and have to break through the boy wall but it can be done!

And yes for some folks if I don't get back it's because I am not interested.

Go Skateboarding Day and Women Skateboarders get some notice

Big day for women in skateboarding today. Super stoked for my skate friends Cindy Whitehead, Laura Thornhill Caswell, Patti McGee, Di Dootson and Robin Logan that made it out to Washington DC for the innoskate event. My flyaway skateboard helmet is being inducted to the Smithsonian collection as well. I was suppose to be working on a photo shoot that got pushed back a few weeks and so I didn't go. Thank you to Betsy Binckley Gordon and Jane Rogers for including me in with these amazing women.

The International Association of Skateboard Companies is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Go Skateboarding Day this week by partnering with the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.

The two-day festival dedicated to skateboarding called Innoskate takes place this Friday and Saturday, June 21st and June 22nd, in the nation’s capitol. The event is a big deal for skateboarding and will provide a grand stage to showcase the sport to the rest of the country.

The Smithsonian welcomes skateboarders for Go Skateboarding Day - Shop-Eat-Surf.com Here are the items Cindy is inducting to the Smithsonian. Cindy Whitehead will be discussing innovation in skate footwear and fashion and its influence on the mainstream. photo: ian logan

Skateboard Typography & Lettering assignment Jim Goodrich and others

Thank you to Jim Goodrich for letting me use his photos as reverence and inspiration for this project. A few other photos were taken by Ted Terrebonne, John Krisik, Brad Bowman and Mike "Smiley" Goldman. This past Spring 2012 I took a class at Cabrillo College down the hill from my house. I went there after high school and drive by daily. I have been trying for a year to get into the Final Cut Pro Class. No luck last Fall so I took a Photoshop class that I loved. Helped me fine tune some skills and learn about new features. This Spring they only offered the B intermediate Final Cut class so I took Carl Rohrs Lettering and Typography class. I had always wanted to take it and since the students enrolled get priority in registering it was worth it. If you ever have a chance to take his class do. He teaches around the world and we have him in our backyard. His knowledge about type is amazing, his lettering skills to die for.

Illustrator vector art from photoshop work.

Wood laser cut 1/4" final piece. Still have a paper cut project to finish and it is on black paper hand cut. Can you say sore fingers.

Duane Peters

Curt Kimbel (Old Santa Cruz Teammate who has a son that rips named Willis Kimbel)

Skated with all of the skaters in this letter but one. The two women in this are Cindy Whitehead and Leilani Kiyabu, Tony Alva, Steve Alba, Jay Adams, Steve Olson, Duane Peters, Brad Bowman, Scott Foss, Steve Caballero, Chris Strople, Curt Kimbel, Randy Katin, Bobby Valdez, Mike Folmer, only skater I didn't skate with John Gibson. Yes I have two skaters in twice. Was running out of time and had a deadline.
