Capitola and Skateboarding

I spoke last night at the Capitola skate park meeting. I had no intention of standing up but then somewhere toward the end of everyone speaking my heart just started pounding out of my chest. I thought you know I'm probably the oldest skateboarder here. I'm a mother of two boys that I drive to Scotts Valley and Lake Cunningham Regional Skatepark to go skate with my kids.

I wish I had, had a skate park locally to skate growing up. I don't count Derby, Frederick Street or Jose park as a real skate park because they are so small. I'm glad they are there but they do not take care of the skate communities needs of a place to skate that is not a drive for a kid that lives in Capitola, Aptos or Soquel.

One of my best memories of skating was my first slalom skateboard race down Monterey Avenue back in 1975 when I was 15. Then again the Capitola Classic downhill race several years later when I was 19. I think these kids are missing out on some great memories by having to skate in places that you get ticketed or kicked out of.

Skaters come in all ages, sizes and backgrounds. I am the president of Board Rescue a non-profit that helps get skateboards to kids. (Which I forgot to bring up when I spoke.) I have taught skateboard classes through Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation. Every class has been full with a wait list. It is sad to once again stand in front of the City Council in Capitola to ask about a skate park. Another generation of skaters from Aptos, Soquel and Capitola that has to skate in the roads, parking lots and school playgrounds.

The parks we have access to in town are limited. I never liked Soquel Skate Park. It had bad transitions and rough concrete. José Skate Park is too small and usually packed with a combination of scooters and bmxer's. Scotts Valley is a nice park but is a bit of a drive especially if you are under 16. The Santa Cruz Skate Park is a good park but it is usually way crowded and has a crew of folks that come over to do things unrelated to skating and I wish they would go else where.

The future generations like it or not love to skateboard. Give them a place to do it safely.

I got a cool Pistil hat last week and some gloves around the holidays. Pistil is a cool little company out of Hood River Oregon my favorite place to slalom race. Hood reminds me of Santa Cruz in that it is a tight community but way smaller and close to snow in the winter.

November 22, we got lucky on the weather. Shot of the styling review rack of clothing for the shoot. Giro, socks, shoes, helmets, cycling clothing, running shoes from Brooks, Asic's, Eyewear from Oakley...
When I first got to Rio Del Mar it was dark cold and it looked like rain, but then the clouds cleared and we got sunshine all day. Jay Watson took the photos. I was the producer, art director, stylist, and location scout.

Stoked to see the Magellan photo shoot project go live yesterday on the Magellan GPS website. Working with local Santa Cruz triathletes. I did all of the production, art direction, location scouting, talent scouting, and styling for the new Magellan product "Switch" website and product launch that will be showing at CES next week. The photographer was Jay Watson super talented surf, action sports and portrait photographer. A definite pro. Big thank you goes to many friends that I have worked with or know in the action sports industry. Eric Richter at Giro for the high end Road Helmets, gloves, shoes, and socks. Shout out to Trudy at the SUP and Tri shop for introducing me to the talented athletes. I was able to work with Tommy Zaferes fresh from a trip back from New Zealand. Eric Clarkson rode to the shoot at 8:00 am on a freshly cool morning, Elle Washburn super fit strong woman, Josh Bjornstad, Margaret Ellis and Stephanie Hocom.

The Switch Series is the new product. I am super busy with a catalog and wanted to post a thank you to everyone involved. Aaron Brookes the marketing director it was a pleasure to work with you again. Have a great Outdoor Retailer show. I loved working locally at Seacliff Beach, Aptos in Nisene Marks Park and around UCSC running track area.

Big thank you to local retailers I hunted and gathered from Arron at The Bicycle Trip for always being super helpful and friendly, Family Cycling, The Running Revolution for exchanging a size for us without a hassle and Fleet Feet in Aptos for also doing a quick size exchange. Angela Stucky for being a great assistant at the shoot and my right hand girl. Make-up from Kylie Muhly from Prima Salon Santa Cruz. I purposely shopped local for clothing and fill in product but used my amazing contacts for other items like Oakleys sunglasses, Giro cycling shoes, that made the whole project complete.

Thank you to Cindy Whitehead and Frances Lam for some tips and encouragement that helped with some key product contacts. Both talented stylists through Frances now is a amazing Acupuncturist. Cindy is the Sportstylist® of the top a athletes worldwide.

Happy to say we got the dog we wanted from the Santa Cruz SPCA. While I was in there they got the call that the little dog Frosty was found. So all around a good day. I was prepared for the worst when I went in to see if we were approved and was happily told we were. Thank you Dr. Hoban for helping them realize we are good pet owners. Dog is in the house sleeping one of two beds. Kids are stoked. My youngest moved his bed into the living room to sleep near the crate last night. All good. Next dog training lessons.

Adopting a dog a lesson 2

Day 2 no word. Kids first comments running in the door yesterday from school was "Did you get the call"? No. Went by the SPCA and just to see the dog again. They wouldn't let me hold it since my application is in question. They don't want me to fall in love with the dog. Too late. My youngest worries he'll be in school today when we get the call. I worry I'll have to tell him the sad news if we get turned down. Emotional. Thank you to all my Facebook friends and longtime friends for letting me know they've had problems too and what they did to get around them. It's not the place now its the dog. I've always been a brainwashed supporter of Santa Cruz. I'm seeing the light now.

Adopting a dog a lesson learned what not to do

Woke up with puffy eyes from crying yesterday. My kids didn’t even get as sad as I did when we were turned away to adopt the puppy we had been wanting to see and adopt at the Capitola Mall. Despite trying to convince the manager that the dog would be inside and outside it was too late. I had written garage and backyard in ink on the form. I was emotional since we had been looking for over a year. Our pets were always inside and never left in the cold. When we first started looking my youngest went from Beagle, Golden Doddle, Chihuahua, to Lab and we had all finally decided on a rescue mix mid sized dog. I had seen the liter on the SPCA website.
The time was finally here. Fences were fixed to keep the chickens in their coop, a new gate and fence in front, flatten pump track, cut down the rotten old Apple tree backyard is safe for a dog. After a few visits with the kids and without to the Santa Cruz SPCA over the course of a year with no match we finally see the dogs we think are the ones on-line. So Monday I drive to check them out and mainly the two different colored eyed pup, but they were closed. So mid week I go grab the door and it is locked it was 1:37 pm and they close from 1:00 to 2:00 (everyday). So Saturday I go after a photo shoot and their are Pit Bulls, small dogs and Chihuahua’s dogs we like are gone. Sunday comes around and my neighbor who would send me photos from the SPCA now and then via cell phone son comes over with the his dads cell phone showing me that the dogs were actually all at the Mall the day I went to see them and he even has video of them playing. The kids and I were stoked. I called to find out where they were to make sure I didn’t go to the wrong place, sure enough two of them were there. Greg and I liked the brown one the kids the black one. We got the black one out which was scared and growled at my youngest. He was cute but I wasn’t feeling the chemistry. Greg was like check out the brown one he is sweet and so we did and then we got the news we would have to get approval from the director since I wrote outside and garage. It was clear to me why those dogs were still not adopted. I was heart broken. Never thought being an animal person, born and raised in Santa Cruz, work my ass off, give, donate, do free work for the city, busted my butt to help give a gift to James Durbin, prize for the Amgen bike race no matter. We have hardwood floors no carpet for because of having pets and had been planning this final step. Yes, we could buy a dog but that’s not what we wanted to do. I really like that dog and it will be a bummer if we can’t get it. So lesson learned to anyone getting a dog from the Santa Cruz SPCA write that the dog will be inside and out. They don’t care if you have a fence or not according to the manager, though when Greg got his dog from the SPCA they told him he needed a fence so he built one and went back and got the dog he wanted and we had it for 10 years until we had to put him down because of cancer. I have friends that got a dog without a fence because they wrote fenced yard. Super ironic since I taught a Facebook class a few months ago though Parks and Rec. and one of the students worked for the SPCA and I gave her helpful advice on how to get more people to the SPCA via Facebook.

I raised a JRT (Jack Russell Terrier) had lessons with Kitty Field and Dr. Hoban. I had her for 17 1/2 years. She was my first dog that was all mine. If you can raise a JRT and keep it happy you can work with any dog. They are super cute, smart and hard headed. They keep you on your toes and need lots of TLC.

By the way I would never return a dog I adopted. They become family.

Styling kit for a running and cycling shoot

I ended up using two different boxes. Business cards, mini skate hard drive, paper clips, scissors, leopard print nail kit, hair ties, wipes, ducktape, clips, zacto blades...we got great weather and big thank you to all the companies that sent product for this shoot. We got amazing photos at the Beach, Nisene Marks Park and up by Pogonip. Thank you for all of the people that stopped for a few minutes to let us get the last of the sunshine. I have to say the top of UCSC campus track area has the million dollar view.

Updating my travel art and styling kit

I've been styling and art directing photo shoots since working with Carlton Chase in the early 1990's when he had Radical Films in Santa Cruz and he hired me to style a PSA (Public Service Announcement) in Pacific Grove, Castroville and Aromas and a Surfing American Express Commercial in Davenport and Pescadero which was suppose to run during the World Series and got pulled for being to arty. Well a few years later the same looking commercials ran. AE would of been ahead of their time. Oh, the corporate world. I still have the same kit. Which contains, scissors, duck tape, zacto blade, scotch tape, sewing kit, thread, extra buttons, velcro, measuring tape, straight edge, safety pins...you get the picture. I started to look for an upgrade from fashion make-up kits to military and construction bags. Their is a big range from my little clear plastic kit. I want a bigger one with wheels and lots of compartments.
In the past few months I've done a few photo shoots, set a window display in a high end Whisky Shop actually called the Whisky Shop in SF. Set a one night art show at the Boardroom for Board Rescue with teams of help, and a window display at the Boardroom and window boxes at the Sockshop and Shoe Company.

Styling and doing window displays for a few decades has been fun and gives me a break from the computer and inside work. I'm always looking at fashion, color texture and what I think is coming in the future.

Can't wait to publish some of the new photos I did with Patrick Trefz for the Sockshop and Shoe Company and Santa Cruz Legs. And have another shoot coming up with Jay Watson. Also, happy that Croakies is flying me out for a marketing meeting to Jackson Hole, WY. Sweet.

I don't take any work for granted. I appreciate all the work I have and feel lucky every day.

Best website source I have found on Japanese-American Internment Camps and history. I don't dwell on the past. I want to keep the story alive and want my kids to learn about it since my parents never spoke about it we have to dig and find some of our history on our own. It is no doubt why I work as hard as I do. I don't take freedom or life for granted.
My parents were asked to go to this Salinas Assembly Center when they first were told to leave their homes, livelihood and walk with one suit case.

Today in the paper I read this Sentinel article in our local paper. My uncle Yukio who is 90 was in the 442 my other uncle has since passed away. I hope he sees and knows he is being honored for what he did 70 years ago. He is one of the producers of the movie "Beyond Barbed Wire"

Here is last nights Facebook 101 Class I co-taught with Sara Isenberg. Great turn out and my second time teaching to a large group. I'm a better one on one communicator. I have to push myself to public speak but every time it feels a bit better. I work with several small and large businesses setting up Facebook Business Pages. This presentation will walk you through the step by step process and shows some simple steps on turning off and on privacy to how to edit your profile image icon. We're excited to be celebrating our 23rd year here at the Pacific Rim Film Festival and look forward to sharing with you the pick of the contenders for the 2011 season. For six days, from October 14-19, we bring you work from filmmakers spanning the Pacific rim: Japan, South Korea, China, New Zealand, The Philippines, India, Mexico, Australia and the U.S.

Our local artists include Bay Area filmmakers Greg Miller and Brian Lilla with their film 'Patagonia Rising,' our benefit finale film. We are also proud to present the premiere of Santa Cruzan Eric Thiermann's film 'It Tolls for Thee.'

True to our theme of 'When Strangers Meet', we offer films with a mission to foster cross-cultural understanding and strive to share our films with the broadest audience possible. To this end we offer our films free of charge to our patrons for the entire festival with the exception of the finale benefit event.

We are funded completely by the support of our community and are especially indebted to Ow Family Properties, whose gracious beneficence has allowed us to carry on our mission each year. Here is the board I made. I was so busy working and working on the show I didn't think I would be able to squeeze in my own but glad I did. I got through college by airbrushing surfboards so I used paint, masking tape and paint pens.

My longtime friend Eli Atkins and Paul Keye made the "scratcher" board set up.

Cindy Whitehead's board was a hit with the girls and ladies. Many came to me and told me how much they liked it. There were many great boards and will post later.

All Proceeds go to Board Rescue. Board Rescue's mission is to provide skateboards and safety equipment to organizations that work with underprivileged and/or at-risk youth.

Skateboard Class if taught would be in the Spring 2012

I along with Gary Holl founder of Board Rescue have taught a few classes that filled up quickly. We enjoyed teaching the classes and have had many parents and friends ask if we would do it again. It is a big commitment since you have to fill out a 5 page form, plan it 8 months ahead and I have always made good swag sticker bags and a signed Skate certificate per each student. I've asked all the local shops to offer a discount for that week which they all have. (Much appreciated.) We have taught a Slide Class with Cliff Coleman and slalom Class at Pacific Collegiate School, and a beginning class at the Santa Cruz Skatepark. Big kudo's to all of the skaters that let us take over the park and respected the little ones. And to my many friends that have helped teach the class and give up a skate day which I know is a big deal when you work all week and give up a day for young tikes that aren't even your own. I will turn away any Mothers that try and drop off their child who isn't signed up. You know who you are and shame on you for doing that and putting your child in that uncomfortable position and putting me on the spot as well. I'm not taking in flakes if I teach again. I have a poll to see which kind of class and if I get enough interest. Thanks.

Went to Outdoor Retailer for the day. It was great to see many of the prints I created as well as collaborations with local artists and designers. Walked the show and met up with a few people from the action sports industry as well. Guess after going to trade shows for two decades you end up seeing a ton of folks no matter if it is SIA, ASR or OR. I was happy to see the Croakies and Stuntpuppy leashes and collars. I saw lots of brands with prints but none with the soft feel and actually printed graphics like this combo. All made in the USA and Croakies has PET recycled bottle belts that were hot.

Meet Todd Francis near the Element booth. He had finished two paintings that were getting raffled off. I had spoke to him via emails and phone calls over the years. We had a close relationship in some ways because he did the art on my Keep a Breast Kings and Queens casting a few years ago. He is going to do a deck for the Board Rescue art show.

We have our second annual Art Show and Fundraiser coming up in September. This will be held at the Santa Cruz Boardroom in Santa Cruz California. Tonights Opening at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

It was nice to see the big tank open again. The turtles had been eating the tiles. They redid the tank and added more great areas. It will be open to the public tomorrow. Got to go thanks to my mom and her husband Curt Bowman who has been a volunteer since day one and has over 5,000 hours under his belt. An avid diver and local Soquel person. We always enjoy going to these events. Great food and a great feel especially at night.

Goodbye Eric Swenson you will be missed

Eric I will miss you. I know Rich will deeply. You were always the quiet one of the foursome. I remember the first years of Indy when you and Fausto drove down in your little red truck on Friday's to NHS (When it was where the Boardroom is now). Jay and Rich would come down from their upstairs offices and stand around the truck and chat. You guys would always talk shit and grab a few trucks and look at them like pieces of jewelry. Their was always a great sense of pride and satisfaction for the weeks worth of hard work. You two would make them and Jay and Rich would sell them what a great combination sometimes Gwynn would come down when Fausto drove the vet but usually it was always just you two. We would skate on the bank sometimes Jay and Rich would as well. Jay in his two footed stance that looked sketchy but he always managed to make a good carve and make the little transition at the bottom.

I will always have the great memories of the first session with Indy's at Newark Skatepark. I remember Rick Blackhart ripping and grinding the trucks even with the swing arms. He would bitch about them and made suggestions which you guys listened too which led to the Indy truck we have today. Back then we had trucks that broke and were stiff and had no turning radius.

I will always be grateful that during my peak slalom and downhill racing years I was one of the few skaters that had the $200.00 a pair full suspension trucks. It was like having the Ferrari of skate trucks, they gave you so much traction that you could turn as hard as you wanted around the cones and never worried about sliding out.

Thank you for all of what you have given to us. I hope you are in a peaceful place.

For anyone who didn't know the history.
Read the "Built to Grind" book. It truly the real history of skateboarding. Their was so much skate politics back in the day. Skateboarder Magazine being in bed so to speak with LA brands and photographers. Photographers shot mostly Southern California skateboarders and never giving NorCal skaters, Santa Cruz or Independent Trucks any play that they came out with their own magazine. Thrasher which led to all the other publications.

Big thank you for all those that showed up. That after all is half the game. I enjoyed doing this presentation at Bruno's BBQ last night at the Think Local First Santa Cruz roundtable in Scotts Valley for merchants and individuals. My goal was to break down in easy to follow steps how to set up a business Facebook page. I added links to social media sites that I read and get some great tips from. I added a few other mentions like nutshellmail to consolidate your social media and a few other additions. It was my first Facebook Social Media group presentation. My strong point is not public speaking. I usually do one on one meetings with individuals and business owners unless of course I get flown out to Bozeman Montana to Croakies which I have twice to talk to sales and marketing and continue to help with their social media and Facebook.

Tomorrow night is a Think Local First Santa Cruz Summer Mixer at Geo Wilsons 90 th anniversary. So my friends for all of you that have a small business and want to improve your reach and get new clients. Networking is key. Go it is free! and what you could have a fun time.

We did this shoot last Feb on a stormy day. Haven't seen the book but heard it just came out. We shot at Lake Cunningham Regional Skate park and in Santa Cruz at the Santa Cruz Skate park. My photo by Lucci Griggi for a Skateboard Book that Ben Marcus a local surfer/skater/writer originally from Santa Cruz was putting together. I set up the photo shoots with Rick Blackhart, Richard Novak, Doug Haut, Bob Denike, Steve Caballero, Keith Meek, Gary Holl, Michael "Smiley" Goldman, Tim Piumarta, and a few others. Sent them on their way to Thrasher to shoot more folks. The book is done and I look forward to seeing the final project. Below are shots they took prior to coming North.

TEDx Santa Cruz even better than I could imagine

So many great TEDx speakers yesterday, all were really inspiring. Top take a ways for me. Live each day like their is no tomorrow (Bruce Lee). Learned that Jacob from Jacob's Heart is alive and graduated from High School (I always thought he was someone's child that had passed away). Learned about the art of Gamification and why my kids like playing games and want to interact with others on-line (maybe I should let them but don't) and how I can use the concept in the work that I do. iPad app or website pages. Learned why one should invest in Apple Stock (can you say iPad and iCloud) learn about HTML5 some great info from Roger McNamee. Mermaid Series Santa Cruz is in Capitola this fall? I backed out a few years ago a few months into it because I was scared of the swim around the cement ship. Capitola doesn't scare me as much we will see. Reminded by Heidi Boynton that I have permission. Met some really amazing people at lunch and small breakouts to chat with folks you didn't know next to you. Two local people I knew did great Annie Morhauser of Annie Glass and Jeff Traugott of Jeff Traugott Guitars. Super proud of them both.

Here are a few of the ones that made an impact on me Lori because I'm the President of Board Rescue a non-profit working on a second skateboard art show, when you think you've done as much as you can think again you can do more and if you want folks to help. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Lori Butterworth Sustaining Compassion: A Nonprofit Story

Lori has founded two award-winning, nationally recognized non-profit organizations, which have dramatically improved care for thousands of children with life-threatening conditions. As the founder and former Executive Director of Jacob’s Heart, Lori designed, implemented, and secured sustainable funding for innovative programs that provide emotional, financial and practical support to families of children with cancer. Lori also co-founded the Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition (CHPCC), spearheading healthcare policy initiatives including the enactment of the Nick Snow Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care Act of 2006. Now she is mentoring the next generation of nonprofit leaders through the Boomerang Foundation and is passing on her own positive, life-affirming experiences while providing support and guidance to young people about “living life on purpose.”

Among Lori’s awards for her contribution to the nonprofit sector are Oprah Winfrey’s Use Your Life Award and the California Association of Nonprofits Award for Achievement in Innovation.

Kyle Thiermann Surfing for Change

Kyle Theirmann, 21, is a pro surfer with a passion to systemically effect change. Combining surfing great waves around the world with making a series of short films about current issues, Thiermann focuses on the power we have to create a better world through everyday actions that we take.

Through his Internet series, Surfing For Change, Kyle inspired viewers to move over 340 million dollars of lending power out of multi-national coal funding banks, and into local banks around the country. Kyle connects young people with the simple daily decisions they make that benefit their local economies and the world and leverages his exposure as a Pro Surfer to empower typically disengaged people to become part of the solution. Kyle was voted Best Inspiration in the Good Times News Awards and is the winner of the Peter Benchley Blue Vision Youth Award.

Catherine Aurelio Gamification

Catherine Aurelio is the User Experience and Creative Direction Lead at Bunchball. She has more than 15 years of experience in interactive media and print design creating award winning solutions for her clients in a variety of industries. In her current role, she provides program design solutions using her unique skillset as a graphic designer, gamification expert and user experience maven to create successful solutions for Bunchball’s clients.

Joe Jordan The Solar Window of Opportunity

Joe Jordan worked at NASA Ames Research Center and the SETI Institute for more than 20 years, serving on various projects, including flying observatories for infrared astronomy, Hubble Space Telescope design, studies of stratospheric ozone depletion and global climate change, the search for planets around distant stars, image analysis from the first Mars rover, and investigations of Saturn’s rings and the atmosphere of its moon Titan. In the last few years he’s been teaching renewable energy at Cabrillo College and San Jose State University. He leads “physics-in-nature” hikes and astronomy/stargazing evenings for various organizations or events in this area and elsewhere. He’s on the Board of Directors of Ecology Action, and long ago helped steer them in the direction of their now primary work on modernizing energy infrastructure. He originated the very first public-facility solar-energy projects in Santa Cruz, including the large-scale deployment of solar-energy systems on several of our schools. Sky-power to the people!

Roger McNameeDisruption and Engagement

Roger McNamee is a co-founder of Elevation Partners, an investment partnership focused on the intersection of media and entertainment content and consumer technology. Roger performs 100 shows a year in the band Moonalice, where he plays bass and guitar. Moonalice pioneered the use of social media in music, inventing such applications as Twittercast concerts, Moonalice radio on Twitter, live Mooncast (video) concerts, the Couch Tour. Moonalice’s single, “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” has been downloaded more than 845,000 times.

Roger is the author of The New Normal and The Moonalice Legend: Posters and Words. Roger serves on board of directors of Wordnik and Move. In philanthropy, he serves on the boards of directors of National Geographic Ventures, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame Museum, and the Rex Foundation. Roger holds a B.A. from Yale University and an M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Bruce Lee My Vertical Gift: What The Cliffs of Big Sur Taught Me

After graduating Augusta State University, with highest honors, Bruce picked up and moved directly to Santa Cruz where he began a decades-long career creating paintings, sculpture, and performance art in Santa Cruz and the surrounding Bay Area.
Having abandoned painting in the 80s and 90s for the immediacy of the moment in dance and theater works, Bruce has discovered the equally mesmerizing dance of immediacy: trying to capture a changing landscape on canvas. He was one of the first recipients of the Gail Rich award in 1998. In addition to painting, his media include projection design, set design, and dance theater. His work has been exhibited and honored in many venues in the bay area, including SF MOMA, Cabrillo College, UCSC, Henry Mello Center, Santa Clara University, Laney College, Santa Cruz Art League, The Bulkhead Gallery, Dancing Man Gallery, Davenport Gallery, and more.

Beckmann's Bakery has a new website. Maximum Impact Design designed a new graphic URL to match the existing graphics to the fleet of trucks and they are updating all of their printed collateral and packaging. Their Facebook Page Welcome, Shop and Farmers Market pages have been updated and link directly to each page. Please press the like button on their FB welcome tab. I still smile when I see the trucks and bread packaging. One of my favorite projects. Working on an ad, Facebook updates and added features to their Facebook page. They have a Flickr, YouTube and a Twitter page.

Amazing view to wake up too.Downstairs has a big living area and bed. Bunk house lots of beds and a bathroom. Solar panels off the grid electricity and water.

Jay Watson Photo Shoot James Durbin Surfboard build week

Here are some photos from the James Durbin surfboard build week taken by Jay Watson. Because I am a over achiever or crazy mofo. Along with trying to build a surfboard for the Durbin Day in record time. I also wanted to document the build with all the people involved. When all bets were called off on Thursday I tried to postpone one of the two shoots I had set up. I didn't want to but figured since the board didn't need to be done in record time we could slow down to a normal pace. This was after American Idol informed Hilary Bryant and Ryan Coonerty they wouldn't let James come to Santa Cruz on Saturday the scheduled Durbin Day. I called Jay who told me he had already rented photo equipment from San Francisco. Since I had Hilary, Ryan, Doug Haut, Keith Meek, Josh Mulcoy, Kevin Walsh and a few others lined up anyway we went for it and good thing as I was texted that we were back on mid morning. A big thank you to the Digital Media Factory for letting use their studio short notice. It was a perfect location right up the street from the Haut Surf Shop and close to the artist Kevin Walsh and skateboard Slasher Keith Meek. Jay does amazing portraits and action photography and he had always wanted to shoot Doug Haut. The shoot would fit perfectly with Jay's other shots of Santa Cruz Big Wave legends Richard Schimdt, John Hunter, Zach Wormhoudt a portrait series of surfers photographed for the book titled Cold Water Souls by author Chris Nelson.

We didn't have the finished surfboard for the shoot with Ryan Coonerty the Mayor and City Council Woman Hilary Bryant but we did have the two Santa Cruz Skateboard completes that were going to be given to James at the Santa Cruz Teen Center courtesy of NHS (Haut is the H) so we did the shoot anyway. Some great head shots and some great memories. Early in the day Jay got some shots of Doug working in his shop and in later at the studio. I asked Doug to give me an I'm over it pissed off look.

Bar gymnastics

Some people I know work hard to lower the bar at work.

That was my strategy at gym class in high school. Not only did I do the minimum amount permitted, I worked hard to do just a little bit less than that. By the time the semester was over, the teacher was relieved if I even bothered to show up at all.

Most people seek to meet the bar. They figure out what's expected, and do that.

A few people, very few, work to relentlessly raise the bar. She's the one who overdelivers on projects, shows up ahead of schedule, instigates, suggests and pushes.

Raising the bar is exhausting, no doubt about it. I'm not sure the people who engage in this apparently reckless behavior would have it any other way, though. They get to experience a fundamentally different day, a different journey and a different reputation than everyone else.

[Why now? What has changed that makes promoting bar gymnastics more than a selfish effort by the boss to get more labor out of the workforce?

Simple. This is the post-industrial era. Success is not about speeding up the assembly line as much as it relies on individuals able to create leaps forward. The person capable of doing that sort of work is in far higher demand than ever before.]

Socksmith Designs new Fall Catalog sneak peak

During the hectic week of getting the surfboard done I was wrapping up the Socksmith catalog with this final cover shot and inside images. I wanted to shoot around the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and tie in using images of the James Durbin week documentation of making the surfboard but since I had a skateboarder as part of the shoot that didn't last too long as security came. We knew we had to do a quick shoot so we got a few shots and then let the skater guy go. We shot on the beach with the remaining ladies. This is the cover shot by photographer Patrick Trefz who does amazing surf photography and portraits. At the exact same time I was having a shoot for Board Rescue with photographer Robert Houser who was shooting the kids at Ceasar Chavez School in San Francisco. The Socksmith is a locally owned and operated company in Santa Cruz who sells to many sock shops in Santa Cruz. It was hectic to say the least. Drove straight from the Haut Shop to meet my husband downtown who had my kids we park and get out. Instantly I could hear crowds roaring and I was getting nervous that we were too late. We walked down and met up with Trisha and Sheri who were going to give James two complete Santa Cruz Skateboards and a few bags of Santa Cruz swag for his family. The crowd was huge and I asked an officer how do you find out where the list to get in is? He told me to go around back. Long story short we were not on the list after names were called out for the Kids on Broadway. Tension mounting and time shrinking. I start typing in a text to Hilary that I don't think we are on the list. The woman at the door radios for someone else to ask about a second list. A guy comes over says he can't help and I hit the send button. My phone rings and there is Hilary Bryant calling. I ask him if he'd like to talk to her? (in a nice tone of course) He immediately walks me to the other side of the room. I wave to the others to follow. The woman he leaves me with gets on the phone and then walks us into the empty Teen Center Room. After we walk in we look at each other and think it's a mistake because we can now hear the screaming fans and we are looking out the window and but no James yet. But then we see the Skateboards and the Guitar that are gifts to be given to James and then we realize maybe we are in the right spot. In the end we were.

Doug Haut with the baseball cap heading over to tell James that he built something for him. That was a great moment for me. Knowing none of us would be at the board hand off but to know James would know who that man was who whispered in his ear. I built something for you.

Super stoked to get his Santa Cruz goods. I wasn't able to hear exactly what he said some nice things to Doug Haut the H in NHS and Novak's niece Trisha and girlfriend Sheri.

James is given a Gibson Guitar which he signs and I heard gave to the Santa Cruz Teen Center.

As far as complete skateboards and helmets go. Board Rescue with the support of NHS or Santa Cruz Skateboards gave 8 complete boards and Bell helmets to the center last year. Now anyone want to donate a few ramps or rails for the kids they can use a few. Hint hint.

This is the first photo I saw and shared with Hilary and many others that were not able to get to the stage that night. We were there in spirit, Hilgard Muller took this cell phone shot of his camera shot. Hilary had one E ticket to get someone in close enough and Hilgard got it. I was texting him from before 2:00 pm that day and it took several days to confirm whether or not he'd actually get the pass. He had to arrange a sitter since his wife was doing a 70 mile bike ride that day. Thank you for letting us have Hil that day. So many people that gave this week behind the scenes. I love this town.

Here are two more close ups of the detail on this surfboard by Kevin Walsh. He ended up not going to the hand off. His brother was having a 40 th Birthday party and he was suppose to leave at noon to get to his party. Hilary was trying to arrange it so that Doug Haut and Kevin would be on stage handing the board to Ryan Coonerty but since American Idol wasn't putting on the big event like originally planned it ended up no one got to go near the stage. It was only fitting that Kris Reyes from the Boardwalk had the honors. He was the person that had to organize the whole logistics of the day and I know he was trying to get us in because I spoke to him a few times that week.

I stay for an hour and then leave so he can work free of distraction. I'll be back in two hours.

Can you say hustle? Thanks to everyone that helped me out. I mean everyone. I think I used my Kudos card this week. I got a e-mail via Facebook from Hilary Bryant last Thursday morning after just coming back from Croakies in Montana the night before. She knew I had worked on the Amgen Surfboard with Matt Twissleman asked if it was possible to make a board similar to that for James Durbin's Boardwalk home coming event. I said I'd see what I could do. I documented this past week working with photographers Jay Watson, Higard Muller and my dad (a retired photographer) who I recruited yesterday morning to add to this week I did a photo shoot Wednesday afternoon for the SockSmith with Patrick Trefz at the Boardwalk and Beach while photographer Robert Houser was shooting for the non-profit Board Rescue in San Francisco at the Cesar Chavez Elementary School. (really). I stalked Kevin Walsh the talented artist that created the art on the 8'6" Doug Haut Surfboard took photos of him working, to save time I didn't have I made use of yet another contact and friend Christina Glynn Communications Director/Film Commissioner at Santa Cruz County Conference & Visitors Council who helped get me images for Kevin to use as photos as reference.

Okay, now how do you get a custom surfboard built in a week? Let me think you can't. But I think I can. I made calls to Richard Novak, Doug Haut (who was sick) I call Jeff at the retail shop who again reminds me Doug is out sick. I call Ward Coffey who was generous enough to help me out. Until I go over the real time plan of this board build and realize I can't build a board from scratch I change gears once I figured the art would have to be done in two days, uploaded via FTP to in Headline graphics, based out of Cardiff-by-the-Sea. I then call owner Jerry Anderson who said he'd do it in 2 hours and get it back to me on Tuesday then the board would have to be laminated, hotcoated, sanded and finished. Hand crafted surfboards take weeks to build. I had several weeks to work on the Amgen Surfboard. I get a call from Doug Haut and tell him what I'm trying to do.

Plan B. I realize I should get a board bag. I have to pick up our Board Rescue t shirts at NHS and I run into Wingnut helps me out but can't find one in the NHS warehouse. I text him later and he's sorry but he's had to head to Cabo. I ask him who can I stalk next and I wasn't kidding. I return to NHS the next day NHS and Richard Novak digs through the stuff in the cage we still can't find out. He calls TC (Tom Campion) of the Santa Cruz Boardroom he has one. I drive there and pick it up. Got the bag. Okay next. More calls, texts, e-mails. Work in between, family, kids, life, deadlines. Photo shoot set for Friday with Doug Haut at the Surf Shop, second stop shoot with Kevin Walsh at his studio, Shoot set for the afternoon at the Digital Media Factory thanks to Marty Collins the owner who is kind enough to let us shoot. Wednesday afternoon I finished a photoshoot got home took the kids to pick up a few items at the Boardroom they wanted to wear Santa Cruz branded wear. I didn't have time to go to NHS so I improvise. As I walk out of the Boardroom with happy kids because we get to sit in the James Durbin section at the show set for Saturday. I get the text from Novak saying I hate to tell you but he's out. It's East Coast feed info from a friend and I have to break the news to the kids as we drive home. Now what? I tell the kids I want to return the goods and get it from NHS directly so I don't mess up TC's inventory. Kids are bummed.

Can't get out of the photo shoot photographer rented gear and booked the day out to drive down from San Carlos. I decide let's just shoot. I call artist let him know he can slow down on the board, get it done but it doesn't have to be done by Saturday. Friday it's on as I'm still shooting just because I can't stop I get a text from Hilary we are on! E-mail from Ryan Coonerty we are a go can you get the board done that is Friday afternoon. Luckily I work well under pressure. In the end the board gets done. I will share more photos later.
Since American Idol isn't doing the full home event we don't get to go to the Boardwalk event not enough security no VIP seating but it was cool my kids got to meet James at the Teen Center. I've been there before having donated Complete Skateboards from NHS and Bell helmets the year before with Board Rescue. So stoked that's where James wanted to go on his visit. It is a great place.

Wednesday's shoot between the other things I was doing. Almost done with the SockSmith Catalog. Local company owners son grew up with James. Small town.

James Durbin appreciation: From Santa Cruz and around the world

Here is just one of many stories posted.
So many great stories you've got to read. But if you could only read one. This one really summed the tone of all of them.

Santa Cruz has a certain magic about it. It is the jewel of the bay area where I have lived my entire life. Santa Cruz is what I call the place you go "to make it without having to fake it" There is a certain spirit or pride and individualism that set it apart. A community appeal. Where you show your "scars" actual and figurative with comfort as they simply are.

Growing up we often lose that, and when I feel a bit too jaded or as though I want to run from the Bay Area or CA I make the short drive through the windy road that is highway 17 to Santa Cruz. Instantly I feel a sense of calm and belonging.

I fall in love or appreciate my home all over again as though seeing it through virgin eyes. Some people have a love affair with San Francisco, but for me Santa Cruz is the epicenter. Where everything falls into place and feels effortless and perfect.

So naturally when leisurely watching American Idol I saw a contestant from Santa Cruz my eyes and ears took notice. I listened to the background story; foremost of a young man that like me was unemployed due to a layoff. The tears and frustration in his eyes were ones I knew all too well.

The heartfelt and pure love between him and his fiancee and family was also something so endearing. Again the things I know deep down are most important, and really do exist all coming from a community I admire so much. I have been fighting my own battles and been gloomy. Stepping outside myself and seeing this has been incredibly lifting and motivating...

So I am watching a fairy tale of sorts come true. So fitting it is Santa Cruz. This is where dreams come true. No earthquakes, economic hard times or any other worries can keep it from building or rebuilding stronger.

James represents Santa Cruz so perfectly. With a grace, humility, and tenacity that we all can learn from. Not just ones with dreams of fame but those of us just wanting to make it. So look to Santa Cruz. You can survive and be who you are with no regrets.

This brings tears to my eyes every time. What a talented young man. I am honored to be working on the project for local boy James Durbin. This should be good for our little town, hit hard by the economy, tsunami, Capitola Flood. Great to have some positive event planned ahead.

Support ESCAPE ROUTE: An All-Female Community Skateboard Zine

ABOUT THE PROJECT: We want to print issue #2 of the community based female skateboarding zine Escape Route. Escape Route is a DIY cut and paste community driven zine featuring all female skateboarders. The idea of the zine is to inspire people to skate, properly represent females in the skate community AND show that we're everywhere!!!!! It also seeks to empower young girls & women to grow into strong, confident leaders who promote and implement social equity via skateboarding.

Escape Route will share submissions contributed by female skaters from around the world. Submissions include photos, articles and interviews of skaters, recipes, tour diaries, reviews, directions to skate spots, up and coming skate events, and places to stay/people to contact when on skate trips.

ABOUT PRINTING THE ZINE: In order to finish this project we need to print the zine (this is where you and Kickstarter come in). It will be a 32 page, color, 5.5"x8.5", cut/paste zine. We would like to use a printing company who uses recycled papers/soy-based inks. It'll be about $500 to print the zines. It will also be about another $600 to distribute the zines (it costs about a $1 to ship in the US. and about $3 to ship worldwide) depending where the zines are sent. $50 will go toward kickstarter/amazon processing fees.

PLEDGES: The money pledged to the zine via Kickstarter will go toward paying for the printing services and postage for distributing the zines worldwide. All leftover money (if any) will go toward future issues of the zine. Since this is a volunteer run zine, we are using Kickstarter to pay for the zine and make the zine more accessible to people regardless of their financial situation by not having to charge $ for Escape Route.

SLAG SF will be participating in the march and providing a skate clinic as well as skating the Potrero Skatepark at the end of the walk. There will be performances and vendors as well for the remainder of the day. Proceeds from the day’s events will go out to the organization’s services that support survivors of rape and sexual assault. The walk will begin at 10 am and end around 1:30pm with activities throughout the day at Potrero del Sol Park. Our clinic welcomes everyone.
